i was curious. today on a 15 miler cycle i was riding through london and felt just awful. sluggish and no electricity in my muscles. the pollution did not help either and to top it off i was passed by two cyclists in sprints between lights. I thought to myself that I had reached the wall, that point where you know it is up to you to keep pushing despite it all feeling its not going to happen today. I really wan't thinking too much about things as i just drilled those pedals through the milage. then after a two hour break i cycled another 15 and felt just great. beat my PB and felt terrific. nothing really happened between the two hours except a bottle of h2o and a seasame snaps bar.

i hit this wall and all i kept thinking to myself just to keep pushing, pushing through the pain and the feelings of weakness. my question is what do other people do when they hit the wall? when you have to dig deep and find that self motivation?

I find it is always helpful to focus on what my goals are. If I ride and don't want my heart rate to drop below 150 beats per minute, I think about what benefit I will receive from it in the future. I think about crossing the finishline with a new Personal Record, doing something that I thought was never possible. Other times I ask myself if when I finish, I will regret not digging a little deeper.

I think about my goals as well. I think about why I am doing this and that if this was easy then everyone would be doing it. I also try to leave it all out on the road. Meaning i give it everything I've got just so it will be that much easier the next time. Good job pushing yourself. Keep it up!

I look around me and say to myself "look... do you see anyone else doing training so hard?"
or
I take a deep breathe and say "what a nice day" (most of the time it isn't, Pittsburgh is known for its rain/snow) and say "This is better than being stuck at work in a that windowless, stale air cubicle"

Also, you said it.... sometimes food/water and a break helps. It's definetly the case for me. It's more mental than anything but I feel that a gel packet is like jet fuel. Always seems to boost me forward.

cheers
