I'm very new to the idea of tri-ing. I've lost 115 pounds since June 2002 (strictly through diet and exercise) and I'm trying to shed the last 20 or so that I want to lose. Right now, I'm doing a run/walk program, trying to work up to running a 5k. I've tried to run in the past, but ended up with horrible shin splints so I decided to shelve that idea until I lost some more weight. That time is now.

I enjoy biking and I was on my high school swim team for two years, so tri seems like a great fit for me. I have a long road ahead of me. I think I'll look at races for Fall 2005, although if I can get this running thing down (or up, for that matter) I might consider a sprint distance tri sooner than that.

This board has been a great source of information and inspiration for me in the few weeks that I've been lurking. Who knew it would be the peanut butter thread that finally roped me in? :D

Melody,
Welcome and congratulations on the weight loss. Yesterday I loaded our water softner w/ 2 50 lb bags of salt and reminded myself that that's how much I lost. Look forward to seeing your continued progress!

WOW!! Congratulations on the weight loss, and welcome to the site. Good luck with the shin splints. A good exercise for those is to tap your toes for several minutes while keeping your heels flat. It can be done anywhere. I have also found that icing my shins before I run helps.

Keep up the great work!

Great job on the weight loss!! You will definately be ready for a Tri by next fall!! That is, of course, if you stay away from the peanut butter!!

Many thanks to all for the welcomes and well wishes! I'm an orthopaedic nurse, so I know all the stretches and tricks to help with the shinsplints...it was just a matter of too much weight at the time. It hasn't been nearly as difficult this time around. I'm following a C25k program that I found on another site before finding this one. It seems to be working well, so I'm gonna stick with it.

Any Georgian's doing the Peachtree City Tri at the end of the month? I'm not participating but I will be there in a volunteer capacity and would love to cheer any of you on.
