sut2burns - 2007-03-08 8:51 PM Ok so I have been thinking..... My biggest fear is the transition. I am practicing my bricks, but I am scared. Any advice on those from anyone would be great........ Any great equipment.... I know this person is doing something wayyyyyy harder tahn me but it would be great to know any equipment that they think is the best.... THANKS!

Maggie didn't talk about brick workouts so much at least when i was in the room and I have to admit that I stepped out at one point to chow down on some of my dad's pizza... so maybe if Carol is stalking reading the thread she can chime in on what Maggie may have said.

For transitioning from swim to bike, bring a plastic basin - like something you would wash dishes in, big enough to fit your feet - and a gallon of water to rinse them off. Put your helmet and glasses on first before you bend to put on shoes, you don't want to bend over too soon after the swim b/c you may get lightheaded and feel faint.

as far as equipment, she didn't really mention brand names that i recall. she did say that its worth the money to get clipless shoes and pedals for the bike and an odometer. for the swim, she recommended getting a wetsuit because it makes you more bouyant (some tris don't allow them though, depending on the water temp - so check if your tri does or not) and for the run, she uses brooks running shoes, but has also used asics - she wears a visor on the run and sunglasses on the bike.

she said her stomach gets very nervous - so she doesn't eat less than two hours before a race, she's also very careful about nutrition. she brought carbBOOM gel for us to taste and it wasn't nasty. its very thin and easy to take without water. the flavor she brought was apple something or other. tasted like an apple pie filling. she uses clif bloks too and i sampled that. it had a weird aftertaste, but wasn't gross. she eats pasta the night before or eats a salad w/grilled chicken and some bread.

unfortunately maggie had to leave before all the questions were asked/answered. she gave me and Carol her email address so we could follow up.

the whole point of this night was to get the bunch of people that Carol has been motivating to do the Danskin Sprint Tri together and excited about the race. our mom is one of them, she registered for the race yesterday and is on her way. Carol has dubbed our group, P W T M - stands for Phenomenal Woman, That's Me from the Maya Angelou poem. I'm attaching a pic of the group taken that night at my parents house. i can't get the pic to load, re-sizing isn't working today, i'll try later!

So i'll follow up with Maggie on some more specifics, though we joked that now she'll have about 10 stalkers pumping her for information all the time, she welcomed the questions. Seems like she's in love w/the sport and loves to talk about it, so its all good.

Thanks Mary!  That was all great info.  I've seen people with the tub of water at races before and wondered if it was worth the effort.  I've been putting off the wetsuit purchase, guess it's time for that investment as well.  What brand do you have?

well technically the PWTM is our mantra.....

Maggie didn't really talk brand names.  she admitted that she is a "sale" girl and spends very little on her basic equipment.  since she has sponsors her suits are sent to her.  her bike brand was mentioned but i blocked that out in my brain since she said it $6500!  she did mention that one of her first tribikes was a FUJI and she loved it, she also said that some soddered piece of it had come off and she called FUJI and since they are a NJ company she took the bike back to them and they gave her a whole new frame, so she was pleased with the customer service.  she uses speedplay pedals but i forgot the shoe brand if she mentioned that at all.  her favorite website for cheap gear was sportsbasement.com

illness happens, gotta roll w/it!

i hear ya! i just ate some oatmeal and i'm drinking chamomile tea. i hope that will give me some energy - but if i have to stay in bed one more day, i'll take it! thank god i work from home and can do that.

this whole thing is of course making me nervous about sunday's race, but i will still do it even if i have to walk - or run very slowly... i will.

hey everyone, hope you are all doing well.

i'm going to ask all of you to keep klynne in your thoughts as she completes her marathon on sunday. she's planning to do the bataan memorial march - check her log for a link that describes what it entails. she's been training really hard and i'm sure she's going to do a wonderful job!

as for me, i have my half marathon the same day - i've been training since january and have had some setbacks, like a sore leg and a last-minute illness, but now the excitement of race day is in my blood and i can't wait for sunday morning!

check in with us and let us know how your training is going. overall, your logs have been (relatively) quiet this month... i guess the feb. challenge WAS a great motivator... lets think of something for april! maybe a bike challenge - some people on BT pledge a certain amount of road miles (stationary bikes don't count) b/c by april, most people have outside riding weather available to them. maybe as a group, we could try to bike 1,000 miles for april? please let me know what you think, i don't want the group to fade away! i miss you guys!

Hi all!

It's 11 p.m. and way past my bedtime, but I'm still on mountain time.

I thought I would be so relieved when the death march was over, but it's actually a bit of a let down.  I definetly want to do it again, but I think I'll skip next year and go again in 2009.  That will be it's 20th year.

I've uploaded a new tri training program.  It was supposed to start Sunday.  I'm not sure if I'll start tomorrow or not.  Today wasn't really a recovery day, since I was flying all day.  I guess I'll just see how I feel, once I get the boys off to school.

Mary: I posted on your race report, but wanted to say again, how proud of you I am for running through the pain.  You're showing the spirit of a true endurance athlete!

Hello VAMPS!

Mary, I definately need a challenge! The weather just turned bad here again, hopefully it's only for this week, but a bike challenge sounds great.  Really, any challenge will help me because I feel like I've fallen apart since the last challenge ended. I've really got to get motivated again because I have a tri in June! That means I've really got to buckle down and get some real training going. I'm completely ready for any challenge you've got, so just give us the details!

I'd like a challenge too.  The thing for me , is I'm on a pretty even training plan as far as run, bike, swim each 2 days a week.  I liked the hours per week challenge or would also like an all around challenge.

okay here's what i suggest for the challenge...

we can keep it just vamp against vamp, but THIS time we will only count swim, bike and run minutes... basically a triathlon challenge.

the vamp who goes the ironman distance (2 mile swim/112 mile bike/26 mile run) in a month - wins! second place to half iron, third to oly and so on...

or we could set mileage/yardage goals for each sport and try to reach them individually or as a team. this month will be especially hard for me, because i have a business trip to vegas the second week in april...

i need votes - and i'm gonna suggest it to carol's group too

Hi All,
I am totally on board for an April Challenge!! I am ready for anything the group votes on but could use some motivation for time in the saddle. The nicer weather will help with that too...

With only two responses so far out of our entire group and the month of April about to begin, I am making an executive decision.

I'm issuing an April biking challenge. The VAMP with the most miles in the saddle during the month of April wins. Because most of us will have outside riding weather available to us, stationary bikes will only count for 1/2 the distance you go, spin classes will be considered the same. (so 10 miles on the stationary bike only counts for 5 miles)

Takers?

I would definetly be up for a tri challenge with run, swim, and bike, but I will participate in any challenge the group decides on.

Whoooo hooooo!!! Lets get this party started I love the idea of a bike challenge for April and I am really looking forward to it. So no more excuses for me...no more skipping workouts...I just need to "shut up and bike".

I love my bike, I love my bike, I love my bike.......

i think for April we'll focus on the bike and then in May we could try a tri challenge...

Waaaahhhh. I just got myself a hot spunky new red bike as well. With tri shoes.

I know you will all feel sorry for me - not - but I am jetting off to the USA on Saturday until April 29. No bike, so no challenge for me.

Good luck, girls. I will check in on Friday and then that will be it for 3 weeks.
