I also took today as an off day, which worked out well because it was rainy most of the day.

Tomorrow I'll be on the bike. I'm still trying to get my pool situation worked out as the place I was swimming is now closed for a few months.

Nothin for me today, had to get the front brakes checked early am. Some thoughts on where to swim when your main pool closes:

If you don't mind the $$ including a registration fee there is always another gym for a few months.

Some schools have public swimming a few nights a week with a couple lanes reserved for lap swimming.

Some schools/pools allow public lap swimming in the early am.

Here is a link from the masters swimming site of places to swim in FLA (worth a shot)

The bike came last night. I am taking it to LBS after work to get it set up. Of course it is now cold in NY.

I've got a question. I was looking at some of the blogs for the group and noticing you all have goals and races for 2007 at the top of the page. I was looking around the training log but missing where you post those?

I was looking through the tabs at the top but I must be missing something.

Thanks for the help.

If you click on the top quick link that is next to the calendar it is the control panel. At the bottom of the control panel is a place to type in your goals.

I didn't get a chance to run today. I was extremely busy at work. I am going to put in a long day tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Has everyone been getting out and training?

here on the east coast it is finally getting cold so those long runs are getting tougher.

hope everyone is well.

Did a nice run this morning. I am learning to deal with the cold because the treadmill has been getting annoying. I will be picking up my bike tomorrow after work. If only it would be 70 degrees again on Saturday.

I just checked everyones logs and it appears we all got something in this week. That is good as this is the time of year for base training. Too much now can hurt later in the year. Can't wait for the new bike pics! Keep up the good training everyone, and we should be checking each others training logs and sending IMs <img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>

Take it from someone who has stumbled all over this board trying to figure everything out...and still hasn't....you are not a moron.

One way to see everyone's log is to simply click on the log button underneath that person's post on this thread. The other way is to click on your training plan button at the top. On that page find the quick links to the right of the little calendar (upper left of the page). The very top quick link is the "edit-control panel" function. You can then use that control panel to add people to training log so you can easily access their log.

Does that make sense?? Maybe someone else can come behind and make it a bit more clear.

Picked up the bike yesterday. I will post pics when I figure out how. LBS said it was a good bike with nice parts on it so I feel it was well worth the $$. I can eventually upgrade.

Do any of you guys use clip on biking shoes? I am thinking about switching to them. With the clips is seems like you could get out of the shoes quickly enough if you needed to my only other concern is walking in them. Every time I bike I walk up a huge hill that is .3 miles. I hate the idea of dragging shoes along to walk up the hill. I can't ride up the hill (yet) without taking long rests and my heart rate normally hits its max when I am just walking up the hill.

Are you taking about toe straps or clipless pedals?

I have used clipless pedal in the past on mountain bikes and intend to use them road biking as well. Once you get used to them they are easy to get out of. As for walking in those shoes, you may want to consider using a "mountain bike" shoe as they usually have a tread and are a little easier to walk in.

Hope this helps.

Some terminology to avoid confusion: Clipless pedals are the ones that actually clip in (sort of a misnomer) and toeclips are the pedals with the straps (you wear your sneakers). I have trained and raced in both toe clips and clipless pedals. It is ok to start out with toeclips. They are better for running or walking your bike or walking up hills if need be. Clipless pedals are more efficient but a little awkward to walk in let alone run. If you go clipless then go to an lbs to make sure the shoes, cleats and pedals are compatible. Check the fit as well. Clipless are not difficult to get out of once you are used to them. Expect to fall once or twice when you start, thats part of the learning experience! Clipless pedals etc. was the only upgrade I invested in for my old bike. The pedals came off later and went on the new bike.

I am looking at two different clipless pedals. Once is the Shimano PDR540 SPD-SL http://racepacebicycles.com/itemdetails.cfm?catalogId=39&id=3396$60 and the other one is Shimano PD-M959 on sale for $130 http://racepacebicycles.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=1778. The bike shop recommended the PD M959. A friend that rides suggested the other. I will check with her in the morning to find out if I have the right one. Rich when you suggested going to an lbs what did you mean?

lbs is local bike shop. Just want to make sure you have pedals, cleats and shoes that are all compatible.

That makes sense now. When I first read it I was substituting the word pounds for lbs. I will be buying at race pace bikes. They seem to be one of the best bike shops in the area.

Special thanks to Caryn for showing Blue this awesome swimming link. <img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>

http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/e/x/exk7/VeryBasicSwimming.html

feel free to post any helpful links on our thread to share with everyone. Be sure to read this article on tri swimming and balance as well. One of my first lessons learned in tri was to respect the swim and learn how to swim like a triathlete. I could do 50s and 100s but struggled with swimming 400 yards or more.  I have learned the importance of swimming aerobically (not anaerobicaly) and coming out of the water with ENERGY! One of my first races was a 450yard swim time trial followed by a slow and painful bike and run <img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/frown.gif'>. Balance has become the goal.

I very much appreciated that link and any others the group might share. This kind of training is all new to me, so anything I can soak up is valuable.

Right now I know I can do each of the distances for the swim, bike and run on their own, but it's putting them together that will be the challenge. I haven't done any bricks yet to get a feel for back to back training, but those are coming later in my program.

Thanks again all for the help and insight.
