I'll have a gel and/or sports drink if I'm switching immediately.  Similar to what I'd eat during a race.

Clif bars are also good.  I go through a lot of those.

I try to get something with a mix of complex ( long burning ) and simple carbs ( quick access ), and that seems to do the trick for me.

Have you tracked how many calories you take in vs. burn?  My guess is that you may not be taking in enough, and that causes the glycogen crash.  Timing is also another important factor in whether I crash or not.  If I eat lots of small snacks/meals throughout the whole day, I do much better than if I have the traditional 3 meals a day.

I eat a clean diet, eat 6 meals a day and I do watch my calories however, you're probably right about timing and how many calories I'm taking in vs. burning.  I've looked back and noticed I normally eat about 2 hours before I workout and then I'll have sometimes a 2 hr workout.  I seem to do a lot better eating about 45 minutes to an hour before my workout.

I normally have my typical 1/2 cup otameal (175 cal.) with my protein shake (260 calories) for breakfast but I burn that in about 45 minutes of cardio.  I've been taking in a total of between 2,300 - 2,800 calories a day.

There's your answer I think.  Try having a snack or something closer to the start of your workout.

Also, 2 hours is a long workout.  Are you taking in calories during the workout?  Through sports drink or something?

Though, I think the answer is related to the timing.

Also, make sure you're not overly limiting yourself in calories.  In order to acheive weightloss in a healthy manner, the general rule of thumb is not more than 500 calorie defecit per day.  Though, I'm personally more of the mind that eating a healthy clean diet, and working out, your body will seek out a balance and arrive at a healthy body composition.

I agree, you should probably be taking in some calories during the workout. I usually use a sports drink and for even longer workouts I use sports drink, gels, and cliff bloks.

If I feel like I might get hungry during a workout I'll eat a tortilla 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before the workout. Seems to work well.

Thanks guys!  I appreciate the feedback. I do think timing is my main issue and I normally only drink water during my workouts.  I will have a light snack before my workout and make sure I have a sports drink for my long workouts and I'm sure that will help.

I have noticed my body does not respond well if I take in a low caorie diet at 2,300 calories and I have recently manipulated it so that I consume 2,800 - 3,100 calories a day.

Heart Rate Training

I've heard this is the best way for getting results but I'm confused and there's a hell of a lot of info to wade through out there. I've read the "220 - your age" theory of finding your max heart rate which seems pretty damn vague to me. I'm also confused about all the zone 1 / 2 / 3 etc stuff. can anyone break it down for me or point me at something useful?

Cheers all.

Tim/.

Hello to everyone

So far, I have not had much time in the new year to read your logs/inspire you guys/check in here. Work has eaten into my life for the last couple of weeks, but there is always promise of some balance on the horizon... We shall see.

I'll dig up some links to a few articles on the site here and post them here tomorrow.

Mike Ricci has put together some good summaries.

Work pays the bills and buys the gear.    Make hay when the sun shines.  Hang in, just keep doing what you can, even if it's just a short run or spin on the trainer or core work.  Balance will come.

Nice to see you're still with us, JPW. Everything has a time and a place so focus on the work while it needs it and once that's done you can get back to the fun stuff :)

A great place to start on understanding HR is this thread by Mike Ricci:

I'm a firm believer in HR training, by the way.

I just put a thread up in Triathlon Talk but I thought I would direct this question to you guys.  I currently take a pharmacy worth of supplements but I was curious to hear from others, besides my own knowledge on the subject, what you currently take for performance supplements.

I take L-Lysine, Fish oil, and iron daily.

I also started using Sportlegs with some of my training and racing. They are supposed to help your body manage lactic acid to keep the burn away and aid in reducing delayed onset muscle soreness. They have vitamin-d, calcium, and magnesium.

I've taken different things in the past but mostly for rugby and judo. for triathlon I'm taking nothing funky and trying to get it all through diet. Well, I'm taking vitamin and mineral supps (http://www.wellman.co.uk/) but that's it so far

I take a daily vitamin supplement.  I probably get enough from my diet, as I eat lots of fresh foods/veggies.  It's more for insurance than actual need.

I also take a glucosamine supplement, though not as regularly as the directions suggest.

Other than that, that's it for me.

Hello again!

Back from a great family trip last weekend. We had a lot of fun in the snow. Being from Minnesota, I'm always hopeful and expecting winter, but El Nino keeps messing with us the last few years. So, off to Michigan we went and I really enjoyed the skiing.

My work has been crazy so far this year, so it is tough to be consistent in my workouts, but I've been getting some in. My family gave me the entry into a swim clinic for my birthday, so next month I will hopefully get my stroke analyzed and learn how to train better.

I hope everyone's year is off to a good start. One of these days, I might try to check out how your training is coming along...

Just to give you some warning so you don't give me a hard time on the ol' logs - I've just split from the gf so training will be taking a bit of a back seat whilst we untangle our lives, find new places to live, sell car ... etc etc etc

Hey all,
how's everyone doing so far this month? I'm back training as much as I can fit in, so expect more comments and questions again lol

speaking of questions, I've just changed my seat post for one that'll let me alter the tilt of my saddle and I've noticed that my legs now ache more in the tears-drop muscle of the quad rather than the whole quad as before. Any idea if I've moved it too much the wrong way? should it be a whole leg ache or certain bits first?

Cheers,

Tim/.

Good to see you are feeling better! Swimming, Biking, and Running gets the seratonin bouncing around in the brain.

I am not sure about the changing of the seat post affecting your pedal stroke much unless you are tilting far forward. That would change how you are working your muscles a little bit.

So far for February I have:

Bike: 11h 8m - 193.95 Mi
Run: 1h - 7.5 Mi
Swim: 31m 41s - 1500 M

Big kick start to the month with that long ride on Saturday!

For the most part, you'll want a neutral seat.  If you place a level on it, it should be ..... level.  ( adjusted for the tail of the seat if it is a raised ridge )  Make sure it's level first of all.  Unless you've got a good reason, you probably don't want to move it from the neutral position.  Also, check to make sure the new seatpost hasn't moved you fore or aft.

A bike fit can be pretty complicated to try and do on your own, if it's not broken, the best thing is probably not to change it.

It's now February!  Hope that it's warmer where the rest of y'all are.  It's brutal here in Chicago.  Yikes!

How did everyone do in meeting their January goals?

What goals do you have for Feb?

I'll start:

For Feb, my goals are:

  - Let my back heal.
  - Do core work twice a week.
  - Consistency!
