Good job.  The swim test is the easiest to recover from but I would still take an easy day before doing the run or bike test...and definitely a couple days between those two.  I wrote an article for BT on strength training last year and I can post the link later this evening.

adameldridge - 2007-01-03 2:25 PM I did the swim test this morning with a T1 pace of 1:46. Which I think is pretty good for me since I have only been swimming for a year now. Lots of room for improvement though. So should i wait to do my test for bike and run till another day. or could i do the run test tonight? Also im looking for a simple weight program. All the programs i have seen have at least 20 different lifts

Something to keep in mind for the swim testing is that it doesn't matter if you swim SCY (short course yards - 25yard pool) or SCM/LCM (short/long course meters - 25m/50m pool) as long as you train in the same type of pool.  In fact, it doesn't even matter if you know that your pool is yards vs meters as long as you do all of your training there.  If you happen to use multiple pools it is important to make sure if they are yards or meters though.  Testing in a 25 yard pool and then using that T1-pace to train in a 25m pool won't work unless you adjust your T1-pace appropriately...100m is about 10% longer than 100y so your T1-pace in yards is about 10% faster.  For example, if your T1-pace is 1:30/100y it would be about 1:39/100m.

Think of the test as a 30min time trial.  What we are interested in is the last 20min of the time trial.  The warm-up, cool-down, and beginning of the time trial isn't particularly important for our purposes here.

kellc09 - 2007-01-03 2:27 PM Thanks Joel.... I will do those tests next week when I get my new HR monitor. Also, when you said do a 10 min warmup, then 30 minutes hard, and 10 min recovery, and take the last 20 minutes... do you mean the last 20 mintures of the 30 hard minutes? Just making sure I have it right since I havent done a LT test before

Subject: Strength Training

Here is a link the the strength training article I wrote last year

This thread might also be interesting.  My view of strength training continues to evolve as I learn more.  This season I'm leaning more towards some traditional strength training early in the season (right now) and yoga, drills, and plyometrics once I get closer to racing.  I'm still working on developing ym plyo routine.

Joel and gang, I will get on the LT testing in the next couple of weeks. I have two young children who do not return to school until the 16th and my husband is in the military (always gone), so getting time to do anything is difficult.  Although my last LT test for running was approx 4months ago and I have been working off of those zones, but I need to retest that as well.

thanks again.tiz.

That article explained alot and simplified everything. The one question I have is the shoulder press the same as a military press?

Military press is a seated shoulder press typically with a barbell.  I prefer to do standing shoulder presses with either a BB or DBs.  If possible it's a good idea to gdo as much as possible standing...it forces your core to stabilize and support your body.  I alternate between BB and DBs from session to session...they present a different path and range of motion.  Another option, what I do more often than not, is to do a hang-clean and press combo with a barbell.  The hang clean is an explosive move that develops power in your hips, knees, and ankles.  It's a great combination if you add a shoulder press at the end of each rep.  Start with very light weight while you get the technique.  This is the type of strength move I'm starting to shift towards...more explosive power and plyometric type stuff.  I think it is more directly applicable to our needs in running and cycling.  I would suggest starting with 4-6 weeks of a more traditional strength program before doing a lot of plyo and power lifts...you need some base strength and stability first.

Great articles Joel.... On my agenda for next year is potentially 2 half marathons (april and june) and then the HIM in August and then a marathon in the fall. Ive got to figure out nutrition, especially for the HIM. Any articles or info on that? Ive been looking into some Hammer products, and their suggestions, but then I have to keep all hammer products through the race as they seem to suggest. Well they always hand out gatorade, and I'd think in 6 or 7 hours id be real sick of hammer stuff.

Race nutrition is svery specific to the individual.  You have to make a choice first...carry all your own or take what the course has to offer.  I typically supply all my own nutrition so I know exactly what I have and how many calories.  I pre-mix a couple of bottles for the bike and mix in my Endurolytes.  For the run I carry a small gel flask and take water from the aid stations...sometimes some gatorade.  The key is to try a variety of products in training and find what agrees with your body best.  I prefer to use Accelerade on the bike for sprint and Oly races and Hammer Sustained Energy (with a scoop of Accelerade for flavor) for HIM distance.  This is mostly because the Sustained Energy is flavorless and you can mix it concentrated...500-800cal in a single bottle.  There is no way I could carry enough Accelerade on the bike for 2:30 or racing.  While they may suggest differently, I don't think it's a problem to mix products through a race.  Just make sure you practiced your race nutrition several times during more intense brick workouts leading up to race day.  I can dig up some more specific info on building your race-day nutrition plan for HIM...I must have posted about it somewhere around here.

How's everyone coming along with the testing?  Post your results when you get a chance and I can help you establish your training zones for the bike and run.  Is there anyone training with a power peter on the bike?

Hye everyone, hpe everyones training is going well this week. I am getting back on track after some time offf. Question to joel, I was going to do my LT test tonight for my run. Here in Detroit, they are expecting up to 30mph winds. I think that means I should probably move the LT test to next week?

Hi Kellie-

It's best to minimize external factors as much as possible when testing so you want to avoid significant weather conditions, use a flat course or track, and try to be rested and generally in a good place emotionally.

thanks joel, thats what i figured, but I didnt know for sure how the conditions affect, so figured Id ask. I guess next week, I will get to a track and do it... I think that will be easiest since I either have hills, or really flat, but alot of roads/stop lights

The track is a good idea since you can avoid traffic and anything else that could cause you to stop or adjust your effort.  Another good thing about a track is that you can accurately measure your distance during the 30min test and use that data for comparison when you repeat the testing later.

okay, got it done and about wiped myself out for the rest of the day!!Foot in mouth

My zones are now

1 - Recovery117 - 151
2 - Extensive Endurance152 - 161
3 - Intensive Endurance163 - 170
4 - Sub-Threshold171 - 177
5a - SuperThreshold178 - 182
5b - Anaerobic Endurance183 - 187
5c - Power189 - 197

they were slower a few months ago, so does this mean I have improved? I am all about improving my speed. Plus any help with pacing would be greatly apprecitated, I went out WAY to fast and had to slow WAY down for the actual last 20min of the test.

How is everyone else doing? I intend to do my bike LT perhaps on Sunday.
