Subject: Recovering from back injury...anyone else?
Hi everyone, my first time posting. First I want to congratulate my brother on quitting smoking, beggining his journey on tri's, and joining BT. I injured my lower back pretty bad in April 2006-- 2 herniated disks, 2 bulging, and 1 torn...couldn't compete last summer...very depressed about it. I'm hoping to get back on the saddle for summer '07 - has anyone had a similar injury? I'm actually afraid to run, afraid to hurt my back again and be out another season. Are you recovering now? running again? Most of the research I've done is that it takes time for the torn disk to heal. Dr. says to take time and rest, but how does anyone REALLY know my back. Yes i know i should know my own body. just thought i'd ask...thanks in advance! :(

I've got two degenerated dics and bone spurs, etc.  My back doc told me to go ahead and train.  I have to admit...I'm in pain.  But what is the alternative....watch'n Oprah and get'n fatter?   Not for me!

I've started doing Yoga (of all things) and it really helps.  There are Yoga DVDs out there just for the back.  Consider it.

Good luck!

I just did my first out door ride and run today after a lumbar sprain Dec. 04.  Biking for me seems fine but the run was a little stiff. I'm going to build up quickly now that I'm mobile again but with more focus on proper posture and extra core work.  Good like to you....OH....I found i could swim with a pull bouy through-out the injury and maintain cardio and upper body strength.

Herniated L5 disk here. Bad sciatica every now and then, but my most recent doctor has been the best so far. He told me I would hurt but that training wouldn't break me any more than I already am.

I too do a lot of yoga and strectching. I spend very little time sitting down, preferring to be in the prone or standing. I also have a lumbar pad for my truck, which keeps me in a better position. Be very conscious of your posture at all times to "save" yor back for when you need it. Also, a little Motrin AND Tylenol before you work out will mask the pain better while you train. Good excuse to get a massage, too!

Good luck!

My husband had a bulging disc (along with degeneration) that was compressing his sciatic nerve. He asked a specialist about his strength training routine and the doc said he couldn't do anything to make it worse.

He wound up having surgery to shave off the part of the disc that was pressing on the nerve because he could barely walk at certain times.

He recovered quickly (was back to work within a week) and began working out again at around 2 weeks post-op.

His nerve is taking a long time to heal, but that's to be expected. It's improved dramatically though since his surgery a few months ago.

Umm, it's been a while, but I bulged, herniated, then ruptured L4, and had to have 40% of it removed in 2001.  I got into tris to prove to myself that my back was sound (if I can do that, I can do anything, right?), and I'm pain-free now without limitation.

For me, the journey back to training came in two phases 1) ensuring the back is structurally sound, which is what the doc has to do.  After my surgery, he said that as far as he could tell, I wouldn't notice a difference and should carry on doing whatever it is that I do.  At a minimum, though, your doc should be very clear and specific as to what types of activities cause you to run a higher risk of  further degeneration through use, etc, etc. ,

And 2) building up the muscular support structure for the back...which is something the doc can give you guidelines about, but it's really listening to your body, and pain threshhold.

And FWIW, it seems a little off kilter that you are so anxious to return to training that you're willing to forego the advice of the doc you entrusted with the care of your SPINE...to me, that's a signal to 1) understand more about the recovery specifics, so you can either pursue your recovery aggressively with confidence , or lay back and go easy like your doc says...or 2) get a doc that you've got more confidence in so that you're on a same page.  A back is for life....

Hope your path, whatever it turns out to be, is a healthy one...

I agree with what Rick said about taking your dr's advice.

I ruptured a disc in 2000 and had surgery. I didn't think I would ever run again. It took me a good year to slowly build up my cycling strength. About two years after surgery my friend wanted me to do a 5K with her. She was slow and I figured I would give it a try. I did some slow jogging and nothing hurt, last year I started running and even trained for a marathon.

I need (HAVE TO) do lots of ab strengthening. If I don't my back muscles start hurting. Yoga has also been a life saver.

You really need to take some time and let things heal.

Thank you ALL for sharing your experiences and giving me good advice....advice that I needed to hear. I guess I just wanted to hear that after back injuries, running is still an option. My dr. said it will just take time. He said that last May....so I guess I'll wait a little longer. Thanks again!

I'm just getting over an L5 herniation and sciatica.  Injury happened mid-August and I slowly started going back the gym last week.  So far I've had luck with the elliptical, some lighter weight lifting, riding (even in aero!!) it totally fine and I think swimming will be fine- haven't tried yet.  I have also heard that I can re-injure the disc just as easily if I'm not active so I've been doing what feels ok.  My doctor and chiropractor have both said this is a good plan.  One thing I haven't done is run- and I really miss it.  I plan on not running for another month or so, then trying that again.  I would really focus on core strength b/c I've been told that's the best way to keep the back healthy!

Hang in there and hopefully you can at least find some less-impactful activities!
