Hi all,
Well, I've been poking around the forums and using the training log for a couple of weeks, so I guess it's time to indroduce myself...

Let's see... I've played competitive sports my whole life, first volleyball, then ulitmate frisbee. Now I'm interested in trying something more individualized. Perhaps it's the lure of relying just on myself, on being mentally tough, perhaps I'd just like to see what I can do. Perhaps it's grad school driving me crazy. Whatever it is, I'll know soon enough. I'm doing my first sprint tri in early sept (700y swim, 18mi bike, 4mi run).

I'm feeling pretty good in terms of training so far. I can do all the race distances individually (plus a little more). My swimming technique & efficiency still need work. I'll being doing open water swimming & some bricks starting next week. My main thing is trying not to get too serious about the whole thing. I want to keep it fun. And I know my tendency is to obsess a little and forget the point is to ENJOY it.

So, that leads to a question I have for all of you -- do you do anything on race day to remind yourself to have fun and not take things too seriously?

Thanks for the site, it's a great resource!
Jenn

First off, WELCOME!! I did not realize how much I can get obsesed when I fall in love with something like triathalon. I had my first race in May and relized I forgot to have fun. The afterglow was great but durring the race I worked very hard. I now have two things I am trying to do when training and hope to use in the next race. First is give words of encouragement as I pass someone. This makes me think of someone other than myself. The other and most important is to SMILE!!    When I saw my race photos done by a studio I was in anguish or determined mode. When I passed my wife and 4 year old I smiled and it seemed to help. Good luck.

Welcome!

To have fun, I always do wacky stuff, like decorate my bike helmet. Sometimes I go with a holiday theme (turkey for Thanksgiving, reindeer antlers for Christmas, etc), and sometimes I just put funny stuff up there like a glow-in-the-dark rubber ducky that has devil horns. People always cheer for the gal with the cool helmet. Plus, it makes for great race day photos.

Welcome to the site Jenn! Sounds like you're well on your way in terms of training. Good for you! I don't generally take the tri thing too seriously because I don't have the time or the skill to get fanatical about it. On race days, I always make it a point to look around the t area and find a few people who are having a great time socializing and try and capture that mood. Good luck to you!
