Subject: Broken foot - need workout ideas!

Out trail running yesterday, I rolled my foot into a muddy divot in the unpaved road, and cracked my 5th metatarsal in two places.  Ouch!  I'm resigned to the couch today, staring at this big, ugly cast.

So, I need your help, BTers: give me ideas on workouts - upper body or core stuff that I can do for the next six weeks.

Oh Crap, sorry to hear this!!  I had the same break (L-foot) from a bad landing on a volleyball court years ago.  Took about 6 weeks to heal.  Lots of time on crutches, then in a walking cast...

 Exercise ideas for ya:

  • On knee pushups and all manner of DB presses and seated upperbody moves
  • Side lying or kneeling leg lifts for glutes/hams
  • Seated knee up leg extentions for quads
  • Assisted pullups if you can hobble back into the gym
  • Core/abs crunches and extensions, like supermans lying on the floor

Chin up chica...at least this happened in the off-season.

Still plenty of time to get back to running and racing later on!

Take care, -Sunny

Sorry to hear about your broken foot

Don't have much to offer in the way of workouts as it seems that Sunny has it already offered.

Maybe a few books on training would help. (See the thread in Tri-Talk about favorite training books)

Take Care and hope the foot heals quickly

bummer!  I broke my foot 10 minutes before my first marathon, same bone - 5th metatarsal base!   I did a lot of the things that SunnyS already mentioned, plus got on the trainer and did one leg stuff.  Lots and lots of core work is good.    Good luck!

Ode of Woe:

"Score: Katherine: 0, Muddy Road, 1"

There once was a girl from the (New Hamp)shire,
Who dreamt of placing in her racing group higher.
She thought'd be fun,
To quicken her run,
But soon found herself in a mire.
Global warming had melted all snow,
and muddy divots creased the unpaved road below,
Her ankle - it crumpled,
Snap, crackle, pop!, down she thumpled,
Yelp!  She screamed out with a bellow!
If the snow had been there, alas,
She probably would have (only) fallen on her arse.
But instead, (blasted!!)
She broken her foot bone (twice!) and got casted,
and is for many weeks humbled, this lass.
