Subject: Overnight Bike Trip?
Have any of you done a cross-country bike trip? My friend and I are trying to plan a shorter trip (from New Jersey to Wisconsin) for early next summer. We have no idea how to go about planning it, or how we would map out a route. If anybody has done anything like this before, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

where should I start? My wife and I used to bikepack years ago. our best vacation ever was a two week, 800 mile round trip from Poughkeepsie, NY to Bar Harbor, Maine.
First bit of advise, go West to East. the oppisite direction (E to W) you will be in a constant head wind.
There are or used to be lots of resources locally through bike organizations for state and county maps. Since it's been a few years, I don't have any current resources but I'm sure there are still many out there.
Let's keep in touch and I'll see what I can find for route planning.
If you want, I could sent you an older book all about bike packing. It may need some updating but at least it's a start. I know I don't need it anymore. Let me know if you think you might be able to use it.

That would be awesome if you could send me that book!! It would be a great help. I figure the trip is going to be about 1000 miles give or take... so it's going to take some training. When you traveled, did you stay in hotels or did you camp?

One of the things I read about doing (never done this myself) was to make reservations at hotels and then SEND them your gear and other stuff you might want. So, when you got to that hotel, you could change out your clothes, etc. Then you just send the "old" stuff back to your home address.

Of course, this means you have to be pretty structured in where you stay and when.

Just a thought.
