Subject: running injuries
i just started training a few weeks ago, so this point for me is very crucial because i'm just starting to become almost decent at running. but this morning i fell and twisted my ankle. it doesn't hurt much if i walk, but when i go any faster than that it tightens up and hurts pretty bad. i'm nervous because i'm afraid that if i take any time off, i'll lose all the progress i've made. what do i do?

You shouldn't worry so much about losing what you've achieved so far. You should worry about causing damage and jeopardizing any progress you can make in the future. So, for now, RICE. Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation. Give your ankle a few days at least and see how it feels. If it gets worse or doesn't get better, go to the doctor.

I hope you feel better soon.

If its not too severe after the RICE, you might be able to do some non (low) impact cross-training activities like a stair stepper, elliptical trainer or bike to maintain fitness.

Good luck

I hate running injuries, but yet again they are a great opportunity to do something else like restructuring your training plan for when you recover, swimming more, concentrating on what you eat...

In my case, I´ve been swimming more and paying more attention to my style and times...before my injury, swimming was just way to rest my legs a bit...now I have to be careful not to overtrain in the pool!

I´m still pretty average but have developed a swimming addiction.

Good luck

if i remember correctly, when i twisted my ankle playing basketball, it hurt immensely with side-to-side motion but was ok walking.  is this how yours hurts?

follow what others have said...RICE.  i think it took me a week, two at the most, to heal the strained ligaments.  dont try to run or walk much.  get it healed...u wont lose much ground over a week...u may even come back stronger.

If you can, an excellent way to maintain your fitness and if you have access to a pool is to do some aqua jogging. I've done it quite a few times over the years, when I got leg injuries. It completely takes the pressure off your feet, so you shouldn't have any issues

RICE, definitely. As soon as you can, stretch your ankles, and make sure you stretch them prior to any running/walking in the future. Since it starts to tighten when you go faster than walking pace, you probably have a mild strain/sprain. Taking it easy for a week (running) won't harm your swimming/biking (if you can't bike, don't sweat it much, but I'd at least try to swim) and you won't lose anything. If your doctor says to take more time off from running than that, I'd ask about alternatives (elliptical, stairstepper, etc.) Do you have access to a rowing machine? That's a good aerobic workout! Or, you can always do some weight training to build more muscle, which will help your training.
