Subject: I Need help with Goals
Ok here is the question are the goals I am considering realistic? And if so what plans should I use to reach them? I am training for the Jefferson Sprint tri in July I plan on finishing in about 1:35 about mid pack for my age group, and then I want to shift gears to prepare for the Texasman OLY distance TRI in October, with the goal of finishing mid pack for my age group as well. I am considering adding a Half marathon in November with the goal of running a sub 2:00 and then the Houston marathon next January goal of sub 4:00. I am on the 26 week intermediate sprint plan now and believe I am on track both swimming and running. I need to know what plan to use to prep for the Sept OLY (Olympic, Basic 12 Week) then the Nov Half Mary, then the Jan full Mary. I have about 9 hours per week to train except for June, and July then I have 15+.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dude, you need a coach to create a training plan for you.

9 hours a week to train can get you ready for an IM in some cases ........ definitely a HIM.  With 8-10 hours a week you should have no problem creating a training schedule (or working with a good coach to create on) that can significantly help you in attaining your goals.

And remember, aiming for any specific place in a race field (unless you are an elite) is not a realistic goal because you never know who's going to show up.  It could be a freak day and every fasty within 200 miles might show up making you BOP on that given day.  Aim for "attainable, measurable and realistic" goals.  Shoot for a specific time like you are for your Sprint tri.  Say, for the Oly., out of the water in 35, finish the bike in 1:15, run in 55 or something like that (just putting out imaginary numbers, no idea what your capabilities are).  Then you can do that for each event you're planning and arrange your training schedule around that.

I don't know if the goals are realistic for you, but you should get a sense as your training progresses.  I'd echo Daremo's thoughts on goals for the oly & sprint.  Try to set a target for each leg and then see how you're progreesing towards that in your training.  Use the goals as a carrot to help you get there.

As far as plans go, the sprint-to-oly bridge would probably be worth a look after your sprint plan.  At some point you may have to up the running as you'll be getting towards where you'd like to be starting your marathon program.  If you have that kind of time, aren't getting injured and are recovering well enough, you may want to consider gradually adding more running to your plans even earlier.  More frequency will pay dividends both in your tris and the open running races.

What are your past results in a HM? 5k? 10K?

I'd say get a coach -- it's been a big help to me, and I don't have nearly as many goals to juggle as you do.

Interestingly, my coach doesn't want to talk about time goals at this point (5 months out from my 1/2-IM). Two reasons: It's too early to worry about a time, and you don't know what race day conditions are going to be like.

Pretty wise on her part, I think.

Given your list and available time to train, I'd say definitely realistic, but you should find someone who can help you turn "realistic" into a specific plan to put into action.  (And I can say for sure that I'm not that person.)  I'd expect to fine-tune the plan as your training evolves.

The only times I can remember are the recent ones I used to run faster 7 years ago and I believe I ran 8 minute miles for 5k’s 10k’s 10 miles and one 13 mile run I never trained other than to run the same pace all the time. So in the last year I have taken my 5k time from 34 min to 26:50 (I can do better) 10k time was 58 min and walked part of it. My training runs now very from 8:40 miles to 11 min miles. I have never done anything beyond the 1 13 mile run 7 years ago.

Ok - so your limiter is endurance which is no surprise (It is for most people!). if you aren't using a plan, I reccomend you start to as it will help you train efficiently. Your current 5k gives you a predicted time around 54ish. And that 10k would give you a predicted Half of around 1:54-56ish. Good luck in your training!

I agree you have plenty of time to train.  So much so, that you might want to consider doing more races this summer, maybe another sprint, a couple of 5K and maybe a 10K or two.
