Hi. I am new to the sport (kinda). Run a tri tri in 2005 and hoped to do a lot more in 2006 but season was marred by injuries.

Goal is to start slow and run a Duathlon in late May.

Right now I'm spinning and doing some core training but I have only run once in the last month. I need to log some miles but how slow should I start if I haven't run in 4 months?

I was running 10 k three times a week in September before a back injury put me out for the last 4 months...

Cheers, Reddog

"The Great White North"... Reminds of of the MacKenzie Brothers!!!  What a great skit/movie...

Anyway, welcome to BT and congrats on your past triathlon!  I'm working up to my first in 2 months and owe most of it to this site (the rest to my nutjob friend that talked me into this silly sport).  You'll like it here: great people, good advice, nice atmosphere, and excellent training plans and tips.  Use the logs, hang out in the forums, and have fun!

(oh... and get those injuries healed, too)

Welcome aboard!

Rob

welcome. i would talk to your doc about how much to do. start out slow for sure. do less than what you think you might be able to do...and ramp up from there. you don't want to end up hurt again. after 4 months, you'll need to get back to it slowly, but it will probably come back faster than you think. and again, welcome to BT!

welcome to BT from another white northerner! Like autun said start slow and dont force yourself. Take it as far as you feel you can go. This is a great site with great info and great people.

For sure, get a doc to OK the running if a back injury is involved. That's not something to mess with. As for how to start up again, as usual, it depends. If you're unsure you might start out with short run/walk sessions and build from there to longer runs or more running and less walking.

Is your 'Great White North' close to the GWN triathlon?

Welcome to BT from North Vancouver.  I just took six weeks off from training (except swimming) due to a severe back sprain.  Still a little stiff at times but rampng up the training big time!  Cheers!

Thanks for the warm greeting.

Nice to have when you are sittin at -10 Celcius or 14 Farenheit

Well I already went for an easy 5k and I am improving (trying) to do some core work (especially on my abs to strengthen my back).

My back seems to be more of a muscle issue so I am spending alot more time warming up and stretching. These two things will hopefully lead me "back" to a race in May!

Oh yeah, I'm from Toronto (but don't hold that against me)!

Start logging your workouts!  I want to watch your recovery as I just recovered from mine.  Well still going to physio but am swimming biking and running again.  Log your core work if you can't bike or run.  I do recommend swimming...just pulling...no kicking...to work on your cardio.  Send me an inspire when you start logging so i can keep tabs.
