I would like to buy a trainer but I do not have a good feel for what brand I want to go with. I would like to stay below $300. Any suggestions from those that use them?

The Cyclops Fluid 2 and the Kinetic Road Machine seem to be the top two trainers out there and both hover around the $300 mark.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

I never tried a fluid but honestly I wish I would have over my mag. mag is fun but fluid is better from what I seen.

I am looking at the Cycleops Fluid 2. It's in the price range and it seems to have a good record.

Kurt Kinetic Road Machine is a good option too. I have this one, but had also considered the Cyclops Fluid too as well.

That price range gives you options for some of the best non-computerized trainers available.  Personally, I have the Kurt Kinetic and have been very pleased with it.

Don't wanna hijack the thread here but I was just going to post a question about trainers. I would love to be able to get something like a Cycleops2 or the Kurt Kinetic but the funds won't allow it. My neighbor has a Bell Motivator trainer he said he would sell me for $ 30-40. Sounds decent. Any comments about this trainer, good or bad ? Yes, I know for that kind of price I won't worry about it and I'll just use it. Do these things wear out, tear up, etc. ? Any comments would be helpful as I obviously know very little about these things.

Thanks.

Cyclops Fluid 2 here.  Wife loves it, I tolerate it....  That's the only one our LBS will sell based on performace and durability.

I've got a Minoura Mag850 (eBay $120).  Maybe a little loud, but I can still hear the tv.  It's the only trainer I've ever been on, but it has worked well for me.  I got it in the fall, but have only had to use it a few times since the weather has been great until last week.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

I got my Blackburn TrakStand Fluid Trainer (new) on ebay for about $180 with a HRM (new) and free shipping last spring. I have been happy with it, and I can watch TV without blasting the volume.

While i personally don't have a trainer, yet, this is what I have read around on other boards:

Mag's - can be kinda loud. The resistance on these typically either go out, or are not very variable.
Fluids - tend to be more quiet. The resistance is good, cause the faster you go, the harder it gets. I HAVE seen some posts about the CycleOps Fluid2 with leaking fluid problems. Make sure it is one of the NEWER models and that you make sure you follow the warranty exactly. They were know as being "difficult" in the past with returns.

Blackburns new ball resistance trainer - exceptionally quiet and smooth. pricey. No bells and whistles , ie - no computer comes with it.

That is what i have seen.

Personally, i'm thinking that I'll get a fluid trainer with a computer attached to it. I'm a data hog and love to monitor and track everything. check it here:

As luck should have it I have both the Bell and the Kurt Kinetic. I used the Bell last year and it is a fine trainer. It is pretty loud and feels kind of light weight, but it worked for my hour long rides all last winter. This year I bought a Kurt Kinetic because I wanted something quieter. It is much quieter than the Bell and feels a little more solid. I would buy the Bell for 30-40 bucks and see how you like it. Then trade up next year if you are really into riding on a trainer.

i don't know where the 'loud mag trainer' stereotype came from.  My Minoura Mag500 is quiet enough to not interfere with TV watching at all.  It makes noise, but nothing I consider unacceptable.

Mag trainers just have a linear resitance curve.  So increasing your speed by X mph will result in an increase in Y watts of resistance regardless of starting wheel speed.  You adjust how much of an increase you get.  So easy may increase resistance by 10% for every mpg, while hard would increase 40% for every mph, ect....  Fluids are exponential, meaning that increasing wheel speed by 1 mph while going 10 mph will give less additional resistance then increasing 1mph while going 20mph.   You just get a greater range of resistance without having to adjust a dial, and it so happens that real world riding follows an exponential curve too, so it's more "realistic."
