Like a few others here have written...a month ago I'd not even thought about searching for a triathlon site, let alone planning on competing in one. I've been a weight/powerlifter all my life, avoiding cardio activity like the plague. However, in the last few weeks I have come to the realization that I am not gonna be a competitive powerlifter/bodybuilder at my age (34) nor will I be able to do much with this body at this weight unless I do something. One of my best friends just did his second sprint triathlon, and was so excited about it, then laid down the challenge for me to compete with him next year (probably in June or August 2005). Mouth spoke before brain thoguht, and voila! I now have 10-12 months to physically/mentally prepare for this. I've been reading several of y'alls journals here and they are very motivational, and should help me stay focusd when I am wanting to stay in bed. My plan is:

a) Couch to 5k running program (12 weeks)
b) Change lifting to 4 days/week, using a higher rep/lower weight scheme and move away form Olympic style lifts (I am keeping squats in though) and more towards DB's to lessen risk of injury
c) I have a mountian bike to start basic riding in a few weeks once I start getting my running in place
d) By January find a Master's swimming course so I can learn to swim better and start getting into swim shape (outdoor pools here don't open til May/June)
e) learn alot about myself and have fun :D

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated

From another big guy - welcome aboard. Your dedication and discipline in powerlifting will come in handy in this sport - especially in the water.

From a Big Girl to a Big Guy Welcome.

I'm with you. I love to swim, I can bike and I hate to run. But Doing all three is such a rush, especially in a race. It's great. I also would love some weightlifting tips from you. It seems my body loves the muscle. I don't want to be Arnold but would love ways to get some more definition. I've been lifting weights for years and love it.

Good luck and stick with it and if you need motivation look no farther than this site.

Thanks for the welcomes gang. LIke Dan said in his intro, this is completely new to me, and right now its the mental barrier of "Holy Cra...I've never swam/biked/run THAT far before, let alone all at once". LIft lotsa weight...easy. But this? Get ready...

From another big guy ... Start on the bike first! May sound odd, but I found a really good spin cycle class at the local gym, and it seems to be setting the foundation for run/swim. After only 3 weeks, my cardio is up and endurance is noticably improved. The only thing about the spin class is that YOU have to be the one to turn that little tension setting knob to the right, or it does you no good.
