So, a friend of mine recently ran his first marathon and qualified for Boston with a time of 3:07, his training schedule was as follows:
3 weeks pre-race: 11 mile run
2 weeks pre-race: 22 mile run
1 week pre-race: rest

After following an 18 week training schedule and running a 4 hour plus marathon, I was NOT amused! So admit it, I am curious, how many people have done a race you were NOT trained to do, what did your training consist of, how did you do in the race, and do you regret it or do you continue to race without training???

All of my races I have not trained properly or adequately for. It's not that I don't train but my training is sporadic, unorganized, limited due to schedule. Sometime, I will go weeks without training, and sometimes I will try to squeeze in too much. What resulted? A whole bunch of BOPER times and recently a DNF for IM distance. I don't regret it and I still continue to train like i've been due to schedule. After June 2008, I will be able to train more.

Triathlete (for 15 years), sponsored I might add, longest distance 1/2 IM (which was his longest run before the 22 miler).
Has since finished 2 IMs, qualified for Long Course Championships, he might in fact be a freak of nature. But, I know y'all normal people do it too!

I don't know if he's a "freak of nature" or not.  But he clearly has a pretty deep running base which made it possible to run a marathon on little specific training.  I'm sure properly trained he would go MUCH faster.

I am a slave to training. And freaks of nature really shake my confidence. I have a friend who ran off and on for a month then did no running for two weeks prior to a race we were running. He beat my PB 5K time by two minutes. I thought, well it was only a 5K, I've got a better endurance background, but the same thing happened during a half-mary, except this time he got me by 22 minutes. At least I can kick his a$$ in the water.

Just finished a race I was not prepared for, and I regret it, except for one thing: my vocabulary has improved to include the term: Illiotibial Band Syndrome ('nuff said).

Well you originally left out the part about him being a long time endurance athlete.  That changes things a bit

Really this just comes down to the whole "who said life was fair?" line.  Some people are just made for endurance!

I'm in. When can you pick me up? I thought we could car-pool to the a$$-kicking.

Ditto. This isn't some couch-to-5k guy. This is someone with a serious endurance base. I'll bet many serious soccer players, or even basketball or tennis players, could gear up to endurance running in a number of weeks. All it takes is a solid, multi-year fitness base, excellent cardio-vascular, and desire. And the willingness to be very sore.

Well, it's not a foot-race, man; we could chase him down in a truck. There's no rules against that. Heck, there's no rules at all!

not much. You can undertrain and do better during the race but you can also get hurt or just have a long recovery after it. My fastest marys are the ones I been way undertrained for but also the ones that I hurt myself afterwards.

My friend who ran a 50k the next weekend runs a marathon then goes get drunk and dances for 8 hours now that is being in shape or what.

Danny Dryer of chi running if I remember correctly says if you run over 30 miles a week avg you should be able to run a mary in one weeks notice. Its all about the base. One reason they ask people to be running for atleast 1 year before they try to tackle the marathon.

There is no doubt about it, this guy needs to have his a$$ kicked, but don't worry he had it handed to him when his Ex-girlfriend BEAT HIM at Long Course Champs.
However, back to the original question. I see people (newbies) posting stuff on here all the time about, running 12 miles max then signing up for a marathon the next weekend. So, who is guilty and willing to admit it??? I am admit I am tempted to run one without training. (and before you even post it, I did train for the last 1, 18 weeks, to the letter, and I then spent 3 months not running due to ITBS, so would I have been better off not training so much?).
