Subject: Question on Racing Belts / Numbers / etc...
I am new to triathlons. I have my first one in two weeks. I am going through what my transitions are going to be like, and I keep reading about racing belts. Here are my questions.

When I bought my new road bike, I received a racing jersey that I would like to wear for the bicycle leg. I also have a lightweight running tank top that I want to wear for my running leg. Do you have to have your number on you during both the bicycle and running leg? Or when do you have to have your number on you?

How exactly does a racing belt work? Where does it fasten? What body parts does it go around? How does it hold the number?

Do all triathlons give you numbers? Didn't they ever write in permanent marker on your leg or arm? I think that would be much cooler.

So please let me know if my clothing plan will work out, and what the deal is with the numbers. If anyone knows any race specifics about NCN in Ohio - for the Loraine Sprint, I would appreciate it. Thanks again.

I'm new to this too, first tri is next Saturday! But here's what I know:

The racing belt is just that, a belt that goes around your waist. It's adjustable, has a quick release mechanism, and holds your race bib (number) with a couple of snaps.

As far as I know, you have to wear your bib during the bike and run. They mark your arm and leg for the swim.

I wouldn't bother changing shirts between the ride and the run.

Thanks.

Would a running shop have a race belt? Where should I go to get one?

A running shop should have some and they aren't too expensive...maybe $5 or so.  I have only done one Tri so far but we didn't have to have the race number on us for the bike.  They mark your arms/legs at checkin, they give you a number to attach to your bike (which I didn't expect and wasn't sure where to hook it on) and a number you need to have on for the run.  I left my number on my belt in transition and clipped it on before heading out to the run during T2.  I guess some races may be different but this was a USAT sponsered race so I would assume most races are like this.  Good luck on your races.

A local running shop should have one. I was just at mine and they had several in stock for $5.

Go to trisport.com and you can order one: http://www.trisports.com/racenumberbelt.html for $5.99

Fuel belt also makes one - go to http://www.fuelbelt.com/gelflaskholder.html

To answer you questions:

1) Most race belts are similar to the straps on a fanny pack or running fuel belt. The clip around your waist. You either pin your number directly on the belt or they sometimes have buttons that you can use. Mine has the buttons, but I prefer to just use safety pins. Like others have mentioned, they are around $5-$7 and can be found at any Tri store (and some bike stores that sell Tri equipment). You may even have a vendor or two at your race that you can buy them from.

2) I have never worn a number on the bike during a tri. I would hate to have that flapping in the wind as I am riding. I wear a tri top and shorts for the whole race so unless I want to wear the number during the whole race (including swim), I need the race belt. The belt is easy enough to put on during the run. After I have racked my bike and changed shoes, I just grab my belt (and hat) and start running out of T1. As I am running, I then put my belt and hat on. Saves a few seconds.

3) I have never heard of a tri that requires the number on during the bike. In fact, I don't think most race require a number on the run unless they use a tear off strip for timing purposes. However, for pictures and tracking purposes, it is nice to be wearing the number. Numbers on the arms and legs are hard to read and may have started to fade by the end of the run.

I know some people here have been in triathlons that do, and have mentioned that "security" won't let you out of the transition area unless your body markings and race number match the number on the bike.

If that's so, how do you keep the # from flapping around, driving you nuts and possibly ripping off?

I know when I rode El Tour de Tucson last year, we had numbers in like eight different places, including on the bike (also front and back of jersey, sleeve, front and side of helmet). The one on the bike was a long piece of poster board folded in half lengthwise. It fit on your top tube and attached to itself underneath with safety pins. We had 35mph winds, gusts up to 50mph. Some people were actually blown off the road. But I don't remember the number on the bike giving us any trouble.

Ralph's half Ironman made you wear a # on the bike and the run even though it was chip timed. I wore my number on a belt and it had to be on your back. The # did flap around a bunch and ripped away from the belt, it took me a while to put it back on in T2... uhhhh at least 30 min, yeah that's right an extra 30 min.
I think they have you wear it so the officals know who to penalize, for infractions.

Tough luck on that extra 30 minutes. I bet you would have won your age group without that nuisance.

If you do get a race belt, you can spin it behind you on the run, just make sure you spin it back in front before you cross the line (helps the volunteers grab any tear-tags). I've already used mine for several 5k races, and I think it's better than poking a bunch of holes in your race clothing.

Some running stores carry them, as well as tri-stores. I got mine from Tri-Sports. Those guys are great!
