Swimming : yesterday I did a test in a 50m pool, at a pace that I hope would let me bike and run afterwards. Result: 750m - 20:07 (2:41 Min/100m).


How do you figure out how many minutes per 100 meters?

And you were flying in the pool compared to me. It took me 27 minutes to do 800 meters.

What difference does it make if you are the last one out of the pool?

Hi Heather:

I use my timing watch start it- swim 100 - you can use the time to figure out apx total time for longer distances - you can also use it as a benchmark - to show improvement in your swimming.

If you last out of the water... I've been close to last - you have to ride and run really hard to get back in the race. My goals are a bit different then yours... finishing any multisport race is a great accomplishment.

So there is not a way to take your total time and distance and find the result?

Like this:

Total time
---------------
total distance

and then do something else to find out the "per 100" result?

I can't believe there isn't a formula of some kind..

This will bug me until I figure it out.

OK..so follow my train of thought. (But don't let the train run you over...HA!)

We know it takes Pedro 20 minutes to do 750 meters. How many minutes does it take him to do 100 meters? (Dear God ... a story problem I actually have a use for...)

so we have 20 minutes PER 750 meters.

20 minutes / 750 meters

20/750 = X/ 100

which gives you

750X = 2000

X= 2.66

Changing the .66 into seconds on a 60 second clock you have:

Y/60 = 0.666 (Y is # seconds we don't yet know)

0.666*60=Y

39.996 = Y (Round up to 40)

So we have 2 minutes 40 seconds. Really really close to Pedro's number of 2:41.

I feel better. The world makes sense now.

Heather,

Everyone has a 'down' period every once in a while in their training so don't be discouraged! Just ease back into it one workout at a time. Of course, this is easier if you have a training parter and/or a plan, so by all means do whatever it takes to get back on track.

BTW, If you enter yards and total time into the BT swim log, it'll calculate time/100 for you.

Also, I'd have to agree with Michelle. While competing in tri's there are different levels of competitiveness - I've seen (at least) three different groups, broken into elites, competetive age groupers and "doing it for fun" folks. All groups are helpful and encourage one another as we've all taken strides most others won't even take just to get to the starting line.

Going to Germany to do a tri will be fun! You'll be the tourist and a novelty for sure. Take advantage of combining your hobby (tri) into your vacation. I've never been able to pull that one off.

Assuming my math formula is correct, it means that I will be far behind Pedro in the lake.

It takes me 27 minutes and 23 seconds to do 850 yards. (Yards being less than meters makes me even further back)

27 seconds out of a 60 second clock gives us the decimal of 0.38

So the formula becomes

27.38/850 = x/100

850x = 2738

x = 3.22

Changing the decimal of 0.22 back to seconds

Y/60 = 0.22

Y=0.22 *60

Y=13.2 seconds

giving us a grand total of 3 minutes and 13 seconds for Heather to do 100 yards.

I'm sure there is a way to change yards to meters, but I don't know how to do it. And, this is assuming I didn't screw up the math so far AND that my formula is correct in the first place.

Will someone check my work? And if my work is correct, am I even in the "normal" range of swimming?

OK. I just found the "calculate" button on the training log thing, and it gives me 3:22 which is the same answer I got with my big convoluted math problem.

But...0.22 isn't seconds...is it? Isn't 0.22 the "decimal version of a clock"?

Am I completely out in left field?

Heather, you nailed it. The calculation to the right of the decimal is the percent of a minute. To get seconds, you multiply that remainder x 60 to get the actual seconds.

Actually, if you click on 'training log, the mins/secs will be displayed, not the decimal.

In daily log entry you enter 2200 yds that takes 1 hr. Hit calculate and 2.73 is displayed. That's 2.73 mins per 100.

Go to the Training Log page and 2m 44s / 100 is displayed. (44 = .73 x 60 secs)

There! (now if I could only run as fast as I can do math...)

I think the real value in keeping track of this at all goes to Michelle's point. This number is just a tool. You want to do occasional checks to see if you're improving, plateau'd or are digressing. If you look at a races prior years results, your time/100 is useful to show you how you may fit into the overall group. You'll be surprised to see the variety in swim/bike/run paces.

Don't sweat your paces. Just go to Germany, do your best and have some fun.

As Jeff said, I use these paces for two purposes:
1) Check if I´m progressing
2) Compare to last year's paces and see where I will be through the race.

I don´t want to be the last out of the swim because I wouldn´t like to do the rest of the triathlon alone. I don´t think that in the bike I could catch up anybody... and for the run I would be too far behind! And I want to be at least a "backpacker" !

PS: 1 yard = 0.9144 meters, 1 meter = 1.0936 yards

Agreed, that's a good reason to not be last out of the water.

Usually some of the faster finishers come back to the course to cheer on the middle and back of packers. I tend to, as I find it nice when the REALLY fast guys/gals (Michelle) come to cheer us on.

Just got back from Indy 500 1/2 Marathon - Wow what a race have to do the recap -
A NEW PR!!! 1:27:48 3RD 40-44 WOMEN - OVER 15000 WOMEN & Got into Indy 500 Club!! Place 368 - out of 35, 000 finishers - Ave pace per mile 6:43!!

Still on Cloud 9!!!

ok. I've been unfocused. I am tempted to list the excuses, but I won't.

I have been training, sporatically, but not recording any of it. So, I refocus again. I don't have much time before my tri in September, and I'd better get focused or I will not make it through it.

How long does this mentoring program last again? I've not heard from anyone in a couple of weeks, and I'm wondering if it all fell apart.

I think the group 'officially' goes through May. It looks like there other groups starting up that'll take folks through their Sept tri.

Sorry for the lack of posting. I've been focusing on other things (work, training, sick dog, family) and have let this part of thing slide a bit. I've never been much of a motivational speaker, and without too many inquiries, just let things go.

Good news: I completed my first race of the season. Local club tri. Swim went well, Bike was OK, run was OK.

Next race: June 10th, sprint tri.

I'm not sure what BT is going to do with the old groups. I'm leaning towards not having a June-Sept group. I just don't feel like I'm proactive enough at it to add value.

Hi!

I will take part in this group at least until Saturday, when I´m suposed to become "Tri". Last weeks have been everything but a good training, but anyway I decided to join with a work colleague.

Any suggestions for tomorrow´s training? I have the option to go swimming or try the bike-run brick (maybe both things is too much).

Another question... The water temperature is 18º today (20º from another source), expect it to be the same on Saturday. Is it too cold? I´m not going to wear any neoprene... any tips not to freeze in the water? (oh yeah... swim swim swim )

I will let you know how it turns out!
