I got my helmet from a Target store. It was somewhere between 10/20 dollars. Is it going to be approved? Or is it just too darn cheap? I could spring for a new helmet, and I likely will, but I would like to race in it this year, and get the new helmet for next year.

Check for either a Snell or ANSI approved sticker. If it has it, it's approved. Otherwise not. However, to my knowledge it is pretty much improssible to not have an approved helmet these days.

I thought all helmets are approved that are sold in stores.

I think that is the rule in Canada.

I agree on checking for the sticker. However, my theory is you get what you pay for.

Your exactly right. Safety wise, there is very little difference between a $10 helmet and $200 helmet. However, the $200 helmet may give you (a) better ventalation and/or (b) better aerodynamics. (Which of course is so important at the speeds I ride )
