Looking towards Spring (it will get here eventualy) need to work on the ABS. Serious work required here. Hundreds of websites advertise abs machines, benches and other devices that are guaranteed to work wonders? Any recommendations for something that actually works or is it down to straight forward grunt work at the gym.

If I can find it, have an old issue of Runner's World that has an ab article with 5 exercises.  It's grunt work stuff and will work your abs very well.

Will try and remember to look for it tonight, scan it to a .pdf file and email it to you if you like.

Save your money.  It's all about the work and not the tricks and gimmicks.

Ab wheel, under $10 most places. Here's what they look like. You can save on shipping by just going to a sporting goods store.

Yes, it looks like something from an infomercial, but this works.

Also, try to incorporate indirect ab training to your workouts. For instance, if you do overhead presses, do them standing with a dumbbell, one arm at a time. Not only is this safer for your shoulders, but doing them one arm at a time will force your obliques on the opposite side to contract to stabilize your body. Barbell squats will also work your abs indirectly.

Forgot the Ab wheel.  That's a good one if you feel the need to spend at least a little money.

I just got the march edition of Bicycling and it has a whole section on core strength with a workout routine included.  Looks like it would work pretty well.

Forget the devices. It's about work.

In lieu of an ab wheel, you can use a barbell with 2.5's on either side.  It really works well.  Side bridges are an excellent core exercise.  Also, place your feet on a fit ball and keep shoulders on the ground, lift your hips until your torso is flat.  These three exercises can be done in 10 to 15 minutes and your core will get very strong.

I love weighted crunches best myself. But I really feel a great ab workout from good old fashioned pushups. Done right and with pristine form they work all the stabilizing core muscles.

No need for any books, machines or other props, although an exercise ball can be useful.  I really like this "around the World" ab/core routine.  Keep in mind that your "core" is more than just the abs.  Everything we do is anchored in the core so it's essential that don't neglect core training.  I'm considering picking up this book out of curiosity...I've heard good things about Verstegen's stuff.

I found the article and scanned it to a PDF file.  It's only 3 pages, yet is 1.72 megs.  Anyone who wants it, just send me an email to

[email protected]

I do get a lot of crap email daily so please put something about BT in the subject line so I don't delete it.

This has a lot of good articles regarding training abs. Check out the rest of the site to check out what they have for training other parts of the body.

That dude's bare feet are grossing me out!

I personally don't feel much from regular crunches anymore. I love weighted crunches on an exercise ball, though, and incline situps (FULL situps) with a medicine ball.
