Subject: 02/04/07 - Bragging thread (and tolerating the cold and wind on a run for me)

Had my first 20 miler in my Boston training today.  It was only about 20 or so out and variable winds from 10 - 20mph.  I knew it was going to be cold and actually searched my fitness membership's website to see if there were any indoor tracks.  The longest was only 1/10th of a mile.  There was no way in hell I was going to run 200 laps!!

So I sucked it up and ran at my usual spot - 8 laps of the 2.5 mile loop around Centennial Park.  Needless to say I was bundled up pretty well.  And the cold helped motivate to move out a little more.

Uhhhhh, that's putting it lightly .......... did my 20 in 2:21:58.  That would be a 7:06 pace ........ :16 per mile faster than my pace in my BQ in November.  AND I ripped off a 6:23 for the last mile.

Needless to say that kept me toasty!  But I have a feeling this day is gonna hurt tomorow.

You know I would have been truely impressed if you had done the 20 miles on a 1/10 mile indoor track.
Congrats on the run, and braving the weather. My mustache was frozen earlier this week after only 50 minutes, so you are the man to put up with over 2 hours.

So what is your bold prediction for Boston?

Nice job!

I'm with you on the indoor track thing.  The one close to my house is 1/12 mile.  200+ laps would make anybody dizzy,

Good Job, that’s a killer 20 miler! And if you weren't so stubborn about HR you could have been wearing one and actually see in numbers whether you ran faster because you are fitter/more efficient or you just pushed a bit more due to the cold. I guess you can guesstimate with RPE but still… wear a dam HR… you can send me the files

Hey Rick,

Knowing your nasal problems, the cold weather must have generated some great snot rockets.

I did my 'long' run outside today too. Only 11.6ish miles but at 13* and 10-15mph winds, it was damn cold. I was wearing a balaclava and anytime I pulled it down to get a drink of water, my mustache froze instantly. And it hurt to blink towards the end because my eyelashes were frozen.

How does that song go? If you're gonna be dumb you gotta be tough...

Great job, Rick. I'll be out there tomorrow AM when it's supposed to be 11 degrees with 22 mph winds. My run is only 40 mins, so if I start to get cold and frustrated, I'll just think of how you pushed through it for 20 miles...

Dude ......... I got one at X-Mas ........ and I even logged the avg. and max. ........ you COULD see that if you looked at the log.

I just don't train by it.  It's just another number to go "Huh, that's interesting."

For my Boston prediction???  There is none.  I would just like to beat 3:10:00.  I'll leave it at that.

Yeah Ernie, there was some serious snottage going on.

Actually, maybe you weren't that inspiring ....The more I think about it, the more I think I might move my run indoors - that's like a -9 F windchill. Brrrr.

Great job today - you're tougher than me!

Great job Rick. I only braved the 10 F w/ 20 mph winds for an 1 hr 40 today. Actually it was 1:37ish as I turned around at 50 min and negative split on the way back. Thought I was getting frostbite on my face as I know skin can freeze at it was around -10 w/ windchill. The best part is that I saw probably about 10 other runners out too.

This morning, it was 4, windchill of -15ish. My running mate and I drove to the place we were going to run, and decided on having coffee. I'm a wuss. I'll be on the treadmill after the superbowl, as it'll be -4 with a <-20 windchill.
