Dear Jim,

My coworker wants to introduce me to the son of his neighbor (son is age appropriate for me). I'm a bit wigged out that his mother has been involved in 'vetting' me as appropriate for her son. Should I run like hell now?

Dear Always Ready,

Generally, my philosophy is to always give a new opportunity a chance, given that it's not illegal. Opportunity strikes once and all that. But in this case, I think your instincts are good. If you're good enough for his mom, chances are you're like his mom. And if you're like his mom, and he likes you, then you're just screwed. No one wants to be some boy's surrogate mommy.

Unless you do, in which case go for it!

I don't want to speak for Dear Jim but I think the vicodin is for if/when I date the momma's boy.

Question: What kind of guy lets his mom set him up on dates?

Answer: Your kind of guy, if you're looking for someone who'll get petulant and spend the next two days ignoring you in favor of his model train setup in the basement if you forget to trim the crust off of his PB&J.

just sayin'

Question: What kind of guy lets his mom set him up on dates?

That is what I asked my coworker! It's ooking me out. I told him I wasn't going to have coffee with this guy unless the guy calls me (NOT his mother). I am withholding adjudication until I see more evidence.

More information needed to avoid resorting to stereotypes and conclusion-jumping! Does your coworker generally have good judgment? Does the mom? Are they sane, sagacious individuals? Does the son even know about this? Are there other indications he is a mama's boy, other than this proposed fix-up? Maybe he is willing (if he is) just because the girlfriends in the past his mother liked best were also the ones he liked best. Inquiring minds.... I forget the rest. (Oh, this isn't the ADHD thread)

Wait, I have one-

Dear Jim,

Why do people ( in this case, men,) lie to people (in this case, women,) they appear to want to date? Seriously. Is it cowardice?  shame? insecurity? I think it's really lame and people (men or women) who lie to women and hurt them should get in big trouble.

Sincerely,

Honest Henrietta

Henrietta,

I can't speak for all men, but I think it a shame that men say anything to get into a woman's panties.  I can honestly say that you are by far the most sincere and special woman I have had the privilege of corresponding with.  I can tell by your tone that you are unappreciated and deserve more in life.  I for one feel deeply about you and look forward to meeting up say....Friday night?

Dear Jim,

What is the best approach to use when an internet stalker admirer, especially those with an oedipal complex, comes a knockin'. I've heard the sound of crickets is the only approach to use.

So, how is the running coming?  ;p

Ummm, I seem to remember a little conversations ... be open, take risks ... something like that.

But hey, if it walks like a duck and smells like duck ... .

Other than that, I got nuthin' to contribute.

Dear forgotyourself,

Would you respect someone who needed not only his mothers approval, but her assistance in getting a date with you? If no, your wasting your time, if yes, Renee is dead and someone has stolen her identity....

yours truly,

Sir Ducksalot.
