It is time to upgrade my helmet. I'm thinking of the Bell Sweep R. My current helmet includes a stick on mirror. Something about riding country highways where trucks, SUV's, cell phone talking, newspaper reading drivers are not paying attention makes me want to know what is behind me without the full head turn. Today's local paper carries another story about a cyclist killed in a hit and run.

I cannot make a decent arguement about weight or aerodynamics when I consider leaving the mirror off my new helmet. I have plenty of other places to improve both. So is it fashion alone? Is it time to give up my security blanket and join the "big kids"?

So the question: Do you ride with a mirror on your helmet or glasses? Why or why not?

I do not ride with one.  Why?  Maybe because if I am going to get hit, I don't want to see it about to happen.   I have been spooked a couple of times but 99% of the time I can glance down or hear somethign coming behind me.  I guess I personally don't see the benefit of a mirror.

I would assume that for most people it is a comfort or piece of mind issue.  I don't judge those who do.  So if you feel safer with it...by all means wear one.

If you like the mirror, keep it!   It might be handy at races too, so you can see who is trying to pass

I train with a mirror on my helmet...makes me feel safer. I like to know what's going on all around me. I don't race with it...I figure either the roads are closed or there's enough racers around that car drivers know there is a race going on and are looking out for us a bit more.

I wouldn't put a mirror in either "Fred" or "Fashion" categories, call it FUNCTION.  Always good to know what is on the road behind you.  Yes, I can usually hear the car as it gets close, but I feel better when I can watch to make sure the driver isn't doing anything erratic.  My cyclist friend wears one all the time, and nobody would accuse him of being a "Fred".

Now, if I were time-trialing and in a position to finish with hardware, I might be tempted to ditch the mirror for the race.  Alas, since I rarely race and have plenty of other improvements to make before I place, this is kinda hypothetically speaking advice...

Side note but some people where the mirror on their helmets during triathlons because they will draft until they see the race marshal coming in the mirror and pull off until the marshal passes.

Oh that's nice....

This might be a dumb question, but are there mirrors for the handlebars?  I suppose those might get in the way.  I don't have either, but was thinking about one for training.  I worry that the mirror on my helmet would bug me for some reason since i'd have to angle my head just right to see behind me.... as opposed to something static on the bike that I could just glance down at.

Deleted because I think the question was for someone else.

Thanks for the discussion.

Sunburnin,

My experience is that mirrors mounted on the handlebars really don't work well. With a helmet or glasses mounted mirror I quickly become accustomed to turning my head slightly in either direction to see behind me in multiple views. A static mounted mirror on the bars can't do that unless you make a lot of head turns or dangers shifts with the bars.

I have become so accustomed to the mirror that in long runs (yes, I said runs), I catch myself looking up to a mirror that isn't there when I want to check out the vehicle approaching behind me.

A mirror on a runner would probably be pushing any reasonable boundry.

I've tried the mirror on the handle bars and it just doesn't work well for me...at least not my tri or road bike. I use it on my recreational bike for rides with my kids and it is okay...going much slower.

Now running...I always run against traffic...cannot stand to have cars coming up behind me when I'm running.

I have a helmet mirror.  Clip on for rides on the road.  Clip off for racing.

Does anybody know where or what brand of mirror to get? My wife wants one and we picked one up at performance..and there was no way that it would attach to the helmet..it was supposed to clip on.  Maybe it was operator error but I can usually figure things out..even if it takes 50 trys.

I used to have a mirror.  Found it useless, and took it off.  I train in mostly rural areas though, so traffic is almost always a non-issue.

My dad has one, however, and he really liked it...till it fell off and he never got around to putting it back on.

I have a Rhode mirror that sticks on the helmet with a glue patch.  I think they are sold under the Blackburn name now.  Like this one: http://www.pedalpushersonline.com/?CID=1055

Many other models out there too.  This is the only one I have used and I like it.

i guess i'm opposite of most people in that i prefer a handlebar mirror. i never could get used to using the helmet mounted mirror. it was hard for me to focus on, and i kept wanting to move my head to check the mirror instead of just moving my eyes. the handlebar mirror is in the same place every time.
