On the road...somewhere
Subject: Tri bike size vs road bike
I have a quick question: I have been riding a Raleigh Grand Prix for 2 yrs that I've souped with aerobars. I won a contest with my company and I am able to redeem points to get certain items and I am currently looking to redeem them and upgrade to a TrekEquinox 7 tri specific bike. My question is what size do I need to order? I ride a 54cm on the Raleigh and I wonder if a 54 would work for the Trek or if I should go with a 52 due to the type of bike. I have to order the Trek so I need to know size ahead of time. I've checked with the local shops and none carry the E7 for me to try out. Any help?

e-mail Trek and explain it to them.

I have no idea but generally, people say to get a size smaller, so just pulling a number out of the air, I'd go with a 52. Or course, the best is the try it but the suggestion about emailing Trek is not a bad idea. Maybe you can email your measurements or something.

I'm currently taking the plunge for a tri bike. I ride a 54cm road bike, and so I went the LBS saturday. They did the laser measurements on me and determined I would need a 52cm tri bike.

Also found out that when barefoot I'm 2 inches shorter than I think I am. Thank goodness for boots.

I've got a Equinox 9, same bike with different components. My tri bike is a 58, and I ride a 62/63 in Trek road bikes. Part of the fit process for me included a new stem, though I don't remember if it was to make it shorter or longer. EveryBody is different, so your mileage may vary! Might be worth travelling to the nearest LBS which does carry the Equinox series. Remember the 5 7 and 9 are all the same frame, so any of them will work for fit purposes.

What company do you work for!?!? I want one that gives me points to get a new tri bike!

Good luck, I'd say get measured, and don't just guess.  Go into a LBS and get measured and talk to them, not just looking at specific bikes.  See what they say- sounds like you already know where the stores are.

I thought I needed a 56cm roadie, but decided to go in and get measured anyways, and turns out that becuase my torso is longer then the average joe's at my height, I would be better off with a 58, much more aggressive position.  So, it's always good to get sized up.
