'fall asleep, fall asleep, fall asleep' - this is because, more often than not, i'm running while pushing my two beautiful daughters in the double jogger. baby fiona usually falls asleep right away, but 3 year old ella sometimes doesn't zonk out until we're nearly back home again. once asleep, i'll listen to music.

biking - i count 1-8. swimming - i used to hum to myself, but now i spend all my time thinking about my TI form and counting laps. sometimes i still slip into a hum and then i can't remember for the life of me what lap i'm on.

this is a great thread. i'll have to steal some of these mantras and try them out!

This is a great thread. I usually say "One, Two, Three, Four, run this hil and you're going to score." When I get towards the end I usually say "Dig deep, c'mon. Dig deep." But I think I need more of a cheer something that rhymes. I'll have to think of a song I know. When I open water swim, I sing "Wade in the Water." It calms me down.

I'll try finding a song/cheer/mantra that goes with cadence and my breathing. That's when it really works. I usually just zone out, concentrating on the task at hand. But I think it goes faster when I'm not paying so much attention to how far I've gone or how much time has passed.

I learned this in an aerobics class long ago, and the rhythm works well for running, cycling up hills and other painful activities. In essence, I completely lie to myself.........it goes like this:

 I LIKE IT!

I LOVE IT!

I WANT MORE OF IT!

Somehow, I convince myself that this is true!

Jen

We used to do that one in the army to but at the end we would have to say, Make it hurt drill seargant make it hurt.

Interesting question, it's never occurred to me to have a literal phrase as a mantra. If I'm not listening to music (I just an interval run to Back in Black. Gotta love it) I try to empty my mind and eventually I notice that I've got a short musical motif going in my head. It's usually one measure in 4/4. Once I have that riff, I run to it and maybe try some variation on it. It works with swimming occassionally and on the bike, never. I think I'm too paranoid on the bike to let my mind wander.

Um, let's see...

"I don't want to throw up... I don't want to throw up... I don't want to throw up..."

"Stupid ankle... Stupid ankle... Stupid ankle... "

and my favorite when I add a few minutes to the end of my run:

"What kind of Pansy-Boy are you that you can't run 3 minutes?" OK, well that last one is less of a mantra than goading, but it works. It goes back to childhood karate lessons...

Me: Sensei, I can't break this board...
Sensei: Well, you were able to break the next smaller board and you broke and even smaller board before. Am I to understand that you can't break a 1/4" thick board?
Me: Of course not, I can break a 1/4" board easily... Um, sorry, what's you point? My hand hurts and it's distracting me.
Sensei: Instead of trying to break one big board, break a 1/4" board followed by another 1/4" board...

Well, you get the point.

-Frank

My runs are usually smaller than 5k. After 1k, I imagine that its ironman, and that i have already biked 180k and those 4k are the end of the marathon. This makes it look easy....

I have a few, depending on how I feel:

1. No excuses, do the work
2. This is YOUR time (borrowed from Herb Brooks in the movie Miracle, btw I think my favorite movie of all time now)
3. Great moments come from Great Opportunity (again from Herb Brooks in Miracle)

Whenever I'm out for a run and it's one of those days I don't want to be out there, I look at my Livestrong wristband and say to myself "Don't quit, don't give up, work through it."

Now, to be a little more inspirational, I like this quote from George Sheehan:

The more I run, the more I want to run, and the more I live a life conditioned and influenced and fashioned by my running. And the more I run, the more certain I am that I am heading for my real goal: to become the person I am. -George Sheehan, M.D.

I count (in) 1-2-3-4 (out) 1-2, unintentionally.
I smell and feel and look and etc. the soroundings, fresh cut grass, sunshine, trees... checking posture, stride etc occasionaly.
This is weird: when I run, I switch to english (in my mind). Why? Becouse I start think about this site, about next log entry etc... funny. (During swim and bike I don't switch to english becouse I did these activities before this site. I never run before.)
Mantra? If I coose one, lets think... ummm....
"I'm invincible!"
Maybe one wich goes with the cadence: I-am-run-ning-what-a-joy-!- LOL

This is strange: I can hardly count laps after first 500m. My brain is so overflowed with all sorts of information of moving and sensing all parts of body I guess. I tried to count from 0 again but didn't work either. Counting/talking part just switches off after a while. I relax so much I just mix it up and then I start guessing... was it 750 already? Or 700? and try to distribute errors on both side somehow...
I am considering geting lap counter. I was thinking about bringing pile of stones (every back and forth = move one stone) since I used to stop a little at the side of the pool anyway. Yeah. Now I try to learn a proper turn so I don't stop every time any more. Any ideas how to count laps?

on last sunday's long run I mentioned to my running partner that the 'chicken dance' song was running through my head. you know - the silly polka song that they play at weddings and such.

on my Tues night run this week, it was back. somebody has placed a hex on me!

funny - I think it seems to match up with a running cadence of about 85-90 steps per minute - right around my target cadence!

I usually curse at myself, using language (in my internal dialogue, of course) that would probably make a sailor blush...its the kind of thing you'd hear a drill seargent yell at a recruit...

One of the more genteel examples: "Keep those legs moving you f--king maggot."

I don't use a mantra when I run because I actually LOVE to run. I don't find I need anything to get me motivated. In fact when I hit the run in my triathlon, I'm always so stoked! Yay! I'm running! This is the BEST part!

But when I swim I have found that I do way better if my mind is elsewhere so I do gratitude swims. When I do laps I think of one thing I am grateful for on each lap, or I pray for someone who is dealing with a lot more than bad swim form. I also recite Bible verses and "sing" hymns...mainly because the water still scares me and I need a way to calm myself. I did this on my last triathlon and it got me through the swim with no panic. My first one I panicked the entire time and barely "swam" a stroke...just a lot of back stroking, trying not to cry, and hoping not to drown.

Putting myself down never seems to work. There WAS however, this Gunny Sgt. that ran our mando pt program (I was Navy) Oddly enough, I don't remember what he used to say...but the vision of him running with us, talking his head off WHILE SMOKING A CIGARETTE never fails to keep me going!

No mantra. The closest thing would be when I tell myself that I am simply going out for a quick 2 km run but when I get to the first km, I tell myself that I can JUST another half klik...and so on.

you are such a cool Mom!! If one day i became a mother, i'd be so proud of myself being an atheletic mom and a model to my daughters.

when i go out for long distance running;

1: i most of time have my mp3 with me. but my pace got effected so much with the music i got. ( never listen to ella, billie holiday)  listening to radio also makes me feel like having a company beside me.

2: dedicate your effort to someone you love. my bother has been sick for few years. when i have hart time to go on , i think about him. thinking about how hard he has to try to deal with his condition. and i would tell myself each step i make is a bless i contribute to him.

3: think about something you have to fight with, few years ago i went to a terry fox.back then my mother had cancer. so i ran the race felt so angry at cancers. cancer is my enemy. and there we got many people there wanting to fight against it. i ran that race so well, in fact it's the best one i ran.

4: think about people you love and those who loves you. they are your strength. back there they are cheering their heart out for you and wanting you to go on.

5: i have higher risk to get breast cancer. so i exercise to reduce the risk. look at people around you. not every one can do this. being able to do this is a blessing. and a privilege. (even sometimes i wonder why i abuse myself like thise!!!)

Today I ran to the mantra of "Brew-ster, Brew-ster, Brew-ster" . That is the name of my best friend's fabulous dog who is really sick and they are testing for various cancers. I just wanted to send her the energy I was genereating. It was a pretty good run for me.

All you dog people - run for Brewster tomorrow.

LOL! You know, until last Sunday, I didn't have one. Then, with 1.5 miles to go on my longest run yet, 5.5 miles, I started to say "Keep on keepin' on" over and over. Of course, that made me think of this thread and I'm glad Charlie and tractoral posted and bumped it up so I could add mine.

So, "Keep on keepin' on!"
