Subject: special needs bags??
I'm throwing around the idea of a HIM in June (CaliMan). I was reading info on the site. What are "special needs bags"? And how do they work?

At the 1/2 I did, there was none. But at the full, they were at the half way of the bike and half way of the run. At the bike, I put a spare, CO2, ensure, bandaids, etc. and for the run, I put some bandaids, advil, etc.

You give it to them the day before or in the morning of, and you have your # attached to it. As you approach the special needs area, you call out your number and they hand it to you.

It's pretty much stuff that you don't want to carry from the start of each leg and might need as a just in case sort of thing.

At the full, I didn't get those things back if I didn't use it.

They're plastic bags that you can pick up during the race that contain whatever you want. You'll typically see them at a full IM. You get them halfway through the bike and/or run. For the bike, people will put in things like extra tubes or tires, additional nutrition if they're using some personal mix, stuff like that. On the run, they may have some personal favorite solid food, an extra pair of socks, etc.

In most cases, you don't want anything in your special needs bag that you couldn't live without. Most races will not promise to get your bag back to you if you don't grab it on the course.
