You've been reading the TNT propaganda again, haven't you? Have you run R'n'R? Look at the elevation chart, net downhill doesn't mean "no climbing," much less "flat as a pancake." Those two downhills at the start wreaked havoc on my quads.

There were also some heavily cambered stretches when I ran it, took their toll on my knees.

I did it in '05 and unofficially last year. I thought it was a pretty fast course. The climb between 7-10 isn't so bad, but the off-camber sections were tough.

Run for the Red marathon. May 6th, in the Poconos in PA. 1500' net elevation drop. It benefits the local Red Cross.

I know: it's not flat. But a near continuous drop is faster than "some hills". This course is ineligible for world records.

Found your name in the 2004 results, not in 2005, a 4:26? Is that you? How does that compare with your PR?

Mikey, those downhill races beat the heck out of your quads, especially if you're not used to them. But, prior to last December my PR was at Austin, which had a 900' elevation drop the year I ran it.

doublej - 2007-02-28 11:23 AM Pesronally, I think "pancake flat" is a little overrated. I agree with the moderate temperature requirement 100%, but having a few hills in there is probably a good way mix up just how the muscles are being used. I don't think any of my PR's are on a pancake flat course. My marathon PR was in Nashville (country music) in 2003, back when there were more hills, especially in the last 6 miles.

Yeah, the seventeen fastest marathons in history were run at Berlin, London and Chicago DESPITE those courses being pancake flat.

Cool

And I hear they were all done by amateur athletes as well. (sorry, don't know how to do the sarcastic font)

Neither does the bear...he means it even when he posts in red.

Does any marathon count as a BQ, or do they specifically have to state as much in their advertisement?  I was under the assumption that only certain marathons acted as official BQ events.

Any many can count as a BQ as long as the course has been officially certified by USATF (USA Track & Field), something which does cost some money, but most race directors will pay for, as it brings athletes to the race.  That's why there's all these marathons (Steamtown and the Poconos one comes to mind) that are advertised as mostly downhill, and all those that say they are flat (like Philly- no big hills, but I wouldn't call it flat as that course just goes up and downCry).
