Subject: Tri shoes as only bike shoes?

Has anyone switched to Tri shoes as your only bike shoes?  I can only afford one pair of shoes  and it seems road shoes are a little more comfy than tri shoes.  Will I be suffering on long training rides just to save a few seconds in transition?  If you could only pick one shoe would it be a road or Tri shoe?

I wear my tri shoe all the time. I've never noticed a difference in comfort...they feel great to me, whether barefoot or wearing socks.

I just got a new pair of Shimano tri shoes about athree weeks ago and have probably worn them for about 10 hours on the trainer.  I think they are more comfortable than my shimano road shoes.  Although the tri shoes are of higher quality than the road shoes were.

can someone explain the difference to me between a tri shoe and a road shoe? I have heard that a tri shoe opens up the other way so that it can be attached to pedals but other than that????
thanks

I have only had trishoes except for LONG LONG ago and they don't seem uncomfortable in the least bit to me. I say go to a local bike shop and try on some tri shoes, I don't think they really are that much different than total road shoes.

I have never even owned a pair of just road shoes. I uses tri shoes 100% of the time. What you say about it being less comfortable is not really valid. You have to find a shoe that fits right. I actually have tried on road shoes and find them uncomfortable because I have a big toe box. With one strap on tri shoes, more room in the toe box, faster transitions, and the same stiffness as most road shoes, why wouldnt you want tri shoes.

But hey you know what they say about opinions...........

I have two pair of Sidi's, but they're both tri shoes -- Lazers and T-1s. Both of them are plenty comfy for long rides (even sans socks).

Thanks guys.   The one pair I tried on didn't fit as well and I made some assumptions.   They just look like they wouldn't fit as good with the one strap as opposed to the buckles, etc on road shoes.   If everyone agrees they work well for training shoes, I guess that is my best bet.

I'll dissent.  For several years I've ridden in a pair of Sidi Genius 5 road shoes.  Three strap shoes (or two and a buckle) just gave a much nicer fit than any of the tri shoes available at the time.

All that said, I did just finally pick up a pair of tri shoes at a great closeout price at the local LBS.  Maybe I'll have a different opinion after I try them out.

I only wear tri shoes and I cycle a lot! I love my tri shoes. In the winter I wear socks with them and put booties over them and I am good to go.

Jackie - tri shoes typically have a loop in the rear to help get them on easier - They usually have only one strap to ease getting them on and off and are made of more mesh for drying quicker which also makes them softer, less stiff which I personally like.

I bought the shimano Tr-30 tri shoes and LOVE them, They are a little roomier and won't break the bank for around 100 bucks.

I can't give you a comparison since the only pair of bike shoes I've ever owned or used is my current pair of Specialized tri shoes. I like them. I've only trained up to half IM distances so far though.

I have two pair of cycling shoes, one road for my training bike and one tri for the tri bike.  They both have only one velcro strap across the top.  The only difference is that the tri shoe has the strap that opens form the inside and it has a stop to prevent the strap from slipping out of the buckle.

i love my Shimano tri shoes with the carbon sole.  They are much more comfortable than my old (lower quality) road shoes.  The carbon sole is very comfortable.

the shimanos were a lot more roomy in the toe box than the Sidi pair I tried on.  I like it but it may not be for eveyone.
