Expert 957 St. Louis, MO | Subject: Diet Pills OK...so my Dr. is allowing me to take some diet pills to help with post-quitting-smoking weight loss. He knows that I exercise, and has told me to make sure to not over-do it and to listen to my body while on the pills. Has anyone else taken diet pills to jump start weight loss? Was there any bad side effects? |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Diet Pills I've taken Hydroxycut. I thought the side effects were not worth taking the drug. I was constantly dehydrated, had problems sleeping, and was really jittery and it didn't seem to take off all that much weight. Personally, I won't take diet drugs ever again. |

Veteran 197 Jackson, TN | Subject: RE: Diet Pills I took pheteremine once before. The only problem I had was that when I stopped taking it (after a month or so...) I totally collapsed energy wise. So, there was a time of readjustment. It was a good way for me to start out on losing weight, though. B |

Master 1641 Seattle, California | Subject: RE: Diet Pills I really have no experience with diet pills but there are probably side effects. Why take a pill and suffer any side effects effects when you can just lose the weight naturally. Maybe it takes longer but I guarantee that is healthier and isn't being healthier the point. Why not start off the new chapter of not smoking and weight loss on the right foot. Losing weight physiologically is not difficult. It's calories in calories out. What IS hard is the will power and over coming the psychological factors associated with eating and that is what you really need for long term success.

Extreme Veteran 461 Cedar Park, Texas | Subject: RE: Diet Pills I would be ultra-leary about taking the pills. My biggest fear would be a rebound when you get off of them. If you can do without them, I'd suggest losing weight as naturally as you can. I think you'll be more likely to keep the pounds off in the long run. |

Unless you have had issues with your metabolism, thyroid, etc. Then, weight loss is a lot more complicated. Especially for women. |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Diet Pills My doctor didn't put me on diet pills, but she did prescribe me medications that have reduced appetite as side effects. Topamax, for my migraines reduces my appetite significantly, in an other all sort of way. Wellbutrin, for my anxiety, also curbs my appetite during the day. Wellbutrin is also prescribed as Zyban as a stop-smoking aid. I wouldn't have been able to lose the almost 30 pounds I did without them. |

Veteran 169 Salt Lake City, UT | Subject: RE: Diet Pills I've taken diet pills such as hydroxycut and xenadrine when I was bodybuilding. I still take them once in a while to cut the fat, however I never, NEVER, use the recommended amount. Hydroxycut will pump you with 600+ of caffeine. I try to limit that intake to less than 200mg a day. When I started to do this, the weight dropped a lot faster and I felt a whole lot better. I do agree however, that if you can limit your use of diet supplements you'll be a whole lot happier in the long run. |

Right it complicates it but it doesn't change the basic principal. Calories metabolized - Calories burned at a deficient will mean you always lose weight. With those conditions however finding the calories your body is actually metabolizing I imagine could be very difficult and that is where things get complicated. |

Veteran 197 Jackson, TN | Subject: RE: Diet Pills I just know from my wife's experience, that she has a lot more trouble losing weight because of her metabolism. But, like you said - the basic principle is the same. That said, I've always been scared of drugs like hydroxycut. I just know I'd be the guy who drops dead b/c of taking it... B |

Is it harder to balance having a suppressed appetite with needing to eat enough to support tri training? |

Master 2051 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: Diet Pills katieyows - 2007-02-28 10:33 AM Yes, he is prescribing them...Adipex. Found this on Wikipedia: Phentermine is a drug primarily used as an appetite suppressant. Chemically, it is an amphetamine (and a phenethylamine). It is typically prescribed for individuals who are at increased medical risk because of their weight, as opposed to cosmetic weight loss.Phentermine is sold either as an immediate-release formulation (Adipex® or as a slow-release resin (Ionamin®, Duromine® in Australia and New Zealand).
So unless you are morbidly obese, I wouldn't use them. I get that it could "jump start" your weight loss plan but if you read through the history of the drug, I'd be leary. You can read all about it here. Remember Fen-Phen? The diet drug that was linked to several deaths? Phentermine (Adipex) was one of the ingredients. Here is the most disturbing thing I read about this drug:
So be careful and if you are going to use it, I wouldn't use it for very long. Good luck!

Does anyone know an accurate, up-to-date source for the height/weight optimal weight chart? There is no optimal ht/wt IMHO. Body fat % is what you should be concerned with. For most women, optimal is something like 18-24%. Can you get your doctor to give you a body fat measurement test with calipers (7 point test of skinfold thickness) instead of an Rx for pills so that you'll really be able to know what you current vs. goal bf% is? |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Diet Pills In a word, no. At the time I first got prescribed the meds I was gaining about 2-3 pounds a week, because I was binge eating so badly. So the suppressed appetite was very welcome. Now that I'm very close to my desired weight, I've discussed changing meds with my doctor, but they work so well for my medical conditions that we've agreed my mental health is more important. So I concentrate on eating calorically dense food, like cheese, energy bars, protein shakes, peanut butter, etc. |

Member 31 ABI TX | Subject: RE: Diet Pills why anyone subject themselves to getting their fat pinched hard by a doctor when theres devices out there that will help you keep your self esteem by taking your body fat reading in non-pinch ways is beyond me. remember doing those in school? in front of everyone? and being the kid that was chubbier than the rest? body fat pinches are for people with hardly any body fat. I'll use updated science and stand on a specialized scale thanks! i know i have fat. i dont need someone pinching it. |
