Getting old hurts!!

So a little background first.  I spent all last year doing endurance work while training for IMMOO.  I have gotten older and fatter as the years have gone on, but sometimes I still think that I am as fast as I was in high school (12 sec 100).

Well now in my older age I coach girls high school track and yesterday we  were working on flat out sprint speed and ran 20 and 40 yard sprints.  Some of the girls challenged me to run against them so due to my arrogance I thought I would be fine in a 40 against some high school girls.  Man was I wrong!  I was repeatedly smoked by two girls on our team and had to walk away with my tail between my legs.

I just couldn’t make my legs go any faster.  The neuromuscular connections have just disappeared.  Getting old is a B^#*h!

Note: These girls were on our state championship 4x200 and 2nd place 4x100 so they are not that slow.

Usually, judgment improves as physical capabilities diminish.  I'd worry about that more than fast-twitch muscle responses.

At a 5k I did in '05 there was a 6 year old kid who ran a sub 25 in the race.  And last year at the Virginia BB&T race day during the kids 1 mile fun run, the winner was an 8 - 10 year old girl who ran a 6:27 mile.

Never underestimate the power of youth!

My neighbor's 10-yr old son ran a 22:05 5K race last Saturday...no training, just "for fun."  He plays on a select soccer team, but he's the goalie, so even then doesn't get much time to run...it'd be interesting to see what he could do if really worked at it.

I was training on a track last night - the first time since school and we didn't even have a 'proper' track then we just had a big grass circle.

We were doing 400m and 800m speed laps and I was constantly lapped by other people training on the track - many of them under the age of 13yrs and some even younger than that!!

How old are you? I'm 39 and I would never loose to a high school girl!

Of course I would never accept the challange. I like to think I haven't lost a step, and that could ruin the fantasy world I live in.

Exactly. Might as well challenge the captain of the football team to an arm wrestling contest.

I do, usually both eyes on them - as long as they are ahead of me and keep me motivated to stay with them!

I think I could still win that one (I have keep most of my strength) but your right, probably not a good idea.

Hey us older guys have to stick to gether. I have a game plan for you. Either of these will get your pride back in a hurry.

You can do one of two things.

1. Challenge them to an Iron Man race

2. Stop coaching highschool girls and start coaching the 5 and 6 years olds

Work on your speed and until you can beat them. Use it as a learning tool to show them that they have to train correctly to get the desired results.

That is unless you don't think you could beat them
