Subject: Biggest Loser contestant speaks out

Last night my friend went to her gym where she heard Ken, the Washington State contestant speak. She said he looked really good but goes in for surgery next week to remove 25 pounds of skin. In his speech he admitted that they didn't "do it right" on the show and that about 80% of the show's contestants gained all their weight back and some gained even more. So sad.

Anyway, in my search to see if that statistic was true, I stumbled upon a reality TV site and decided to share some things that amused me. (or not.)

  • Kelly Pickler says "no comment" to boob job speculation.
  • Anna Nicole was finally burried in the Bahamas. (I didn't know this...I've been avoiding ANS "news casts".
  • Alison Sweeney will replace Caroline Rhea at Biggest Loser host. (She'll always be little Sami to me from Days of our Lives)
  • Chris Daughty trying to move out of "American Idol" shadow. (Listen buddy, not that I blame you...but millions of Americans know your name because of AI. Don't hate. Oh, and I love your album.)
There you go COJ, some useless info for ya.

Really?  Losing 15-20 pounds a week for weeks on end isn't conducive to long term weight loss?  Who knew??

I had always wondered what percentage of them got tummy tucks and so on.  When someone drops 20-30 lbs over 6 months I can see the skin catching up without too much help.  But when you're dropping half your body mass in less than a year, there's no way.

"Little Sami" has lost a bunch of weight- she was heavy for a while, lost it, got preg, lost it, and I thnk she is preg again?  She looks great, haven't seen DOOL for quite some time.

I guess the remaining 20% leaves Matt and Suzie?   80% is a high failure number.  Guess maybe all they really cared about was the money?

That's exactly what I thought.  That's why I was searching online to see if that statistic was accurate.  Of course NBC doesn't post that kind of information, it's bad for ratings.  Ken wasn't bad mouthing the show, he just wanted to point out that losing weight is easy (relatively).  It's the maintenance that's tough.  Matt & Suzie gained some of their weight back but they are certainly not as heavy as they were.

I would think that the added motivation of being a "public figure" would aid in the weight maintenance and that more contestnts would keep the weight off. I know that I would make the most of the 15 mins and cash in on speaking engagements.

80% failure is really high.  It's sad that they don't teach people a better way to lose weight and keep it off in the long term.

Artemis - 2007-03-06 3:47 PM 80% failure is really high. It's sad that they don't teach people a better way to lose weight and keep it off in the long term.

It seems REALLY high to me.  That means 40 out of 50 people gained their weight back.  (Hence my search this morning.)  I wonder if he just mis-quoted that number.  Of maybe he meant since the first season.  That would make a lot more sense.  But even then 80% is still a lot.

I remember watching the finale and not everyone had the kind of results the top 10 or 12 did.  There were quite a few of the "play at home" people that were still pretty large.  I suppose the cameras are the primary motivation for many.  So 1 year later when the cameras are long gone, I can see how it would be easy to let the pounds creep back up.

Actually 40/50 were the people who thought 'Daughtry'was a Matchbox 20 rehash cheezo album. The weight regainers were 8/10.

I actually know both Kai and Amy from last season's BL, and we've had some in-depth discussions about this very topic. A large majority of the girls on the show end up either a) getting surgery to deal with the loose skin or b) gaining the weight back. Whereas a couple of the guys from the past couple seasons are either a) trying to bulk up to fill in some of the loose skin (ie marty) or b) gain the weight back.

I would say based on the people I know from the show the failure rate is more like 40-50% than 80%, but I also must say that in the end it is reality tv. It isn't a show aimed at making people's lives better, it is about ratings and money.

I mean hell, my girl Kai still hasn't gotten her paycheck from the show for the weekly 'pennance' they get.
