I swam 43 laps today which is 2,175 yards. The IM is 4,224 yards or 85.5 laps. So today I swam 1/2 of the distance I need to cover. It took me 55:35. Extrapolating this to 2.4 miles and this comes to 111 minutes or 1:51. My goal or target time is 1:30. Naturally, fatigue will slow me down and the second half would take longer so simply doubling the time is a stretch. However, the swim will include a little current so that will help out some.

The interesting thing is, before last week it had been 8 months since I swam and I'm already able to cover half of the distance. If I took 8 months off from running, there is no way I'd be back to 13 miles after only two weeks running.

I swim freestyle for as long as I can then do a recovery lap using breaststroke. I think I could swim to China using the breaststroke and kind of equate this to walking. My breast stroke lap is about 15 seconds slower than my freestyle stoke laps. Today 3 of my 43 laps were recovery/breaststroke laps.

I really enjoy the swimming. The swim this morning was not "hard" but kinda tiresome. My arms were not tired at all and I could have gone longer if I pushed it.

I have no idea what I'm doing in the pool! My 'training plan' for swimming is simply to swim as much and as long as I can. That is, I don't know anything about drills or intervals. Right now I'm only swimming twice a week but will increase this to 3x a week this summer.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

~Mike

The only thing I know about swimming is what I read. You'll get a LOT more from doing BASE intervals than swimming straight sets. That is, doing 200-400 meter intervals with little rest between (25 secs -45 secs MAX). You'll see an increase in speed and endurance. Try to swim 3 times a week- twice doing intervals and once doing a longer, non stop "recovery" swim.

I hope it is true about doing intervals to get more improvement.  I started using a book, Swim workouts for triathletes. It has me doing quite a few intervals, which I did not do at all last year.  My best 1/2 ironman time was 37 minutes.  So I will know on June 10th when i do the eagleman if what they say is true.

Hey, Mike - sounds like you are doing great.  That's a lot of time in the pool.

You said you have 'no idea' what you are doing in the pool.  Whereas I doubt that's the case, have you considered swim lessons or getting the Total Immersion video?  We opted for TI in lieu of swim training since we didn't want to have to stick to a schedule of lessons.   TI was great and helped a lot with our form which led to increased speed, less fatigue, etc.

Also, do you think your swim will be wetsuit legal?  That will help a lot with balance and speed.  You'll gain a good bit of time over your pool pace.  Between having the wetsuit on and not having to turn every 25 meters or so, you'll get into a good rhythym and you'll be surprised at how good your pace will be.

 Keep up the good work!

Thanks Joann.  No, I don't think wetsuites will be allowed and even if they are, I don't think I'll wear one.  I think the added bouyancy of the wetsuit was what made me sea sick at the GCT HIM last year as it kept me bobbing around like a cork!

I bought the TI book last year and try to employ the principles.

Are you doing any swims with chemicals and sewage? Your skin will, in all likelihood, rot off about 30 minutes or so on the bike. The Ohio R. is NASTY!
