The annual training plan is pretty straight forward and I've got it established all the way through the half Ironman I want to do next year.  Moving from that to the actual daily workouts is not very clear, though.  Any body else work through this?

I have the book and had the same problem, I set up the worksheet and figured out my A, B and C races, when I was in each periood and such and understood what was going on and then I realized well that is all good but what workout do I do today? Then I went to this site and downloaded the couch to sprint plan and have adapted it as I could. I'm going to try again this off season to use the Training Bible because I like the approach it uses but I don't think it is an entry lewvel book, I'm hoping after training for a year I'll better be able to set up the specific workouts using the periodization techniques from the book.

I'm anxious to hear others answers to your question. Hopefully they will help me as well.

I got to the same point....A, B and C races, figured out the number of hours per week I would spend leading up....

I ended up just making my own workouts and had them match the hours that I calculated from the calendar it had me create.

I would also be curious to see how others did it.

I agree.  I bought another book by Friel (Going Long).  It's a great book and has some terrific advice.  It also helps you establish an annual plan, but then gives only rough guidance as to how each week and each workout should look.  I solved this problem in two ways:

1)  This year is my first year training for traithlons.  I decided that simply logging the hours would get me as much benefit as trying to micromanage my workout setups.  Just mix it up a little and hit the road, right?  It seemed to work for me.  I pretty much followed the hours that I laid out, and I took recovery weeks when they were on the schedule.

2)  Beginnning 11-Oct, I will be training for Ironman Arizona on 9-Apr-05.  I bought Training Plans for Multisport Athletes, which refers repeatedly to Friel.  However, this book has specific workouts placed on specific days, with several plans.  I have chosen the 26 week Ironman plan.

There is an "on-line Virtual Coach" on the Training Bible website - is anyone using that? if so do you feel it is worth it?

Thanks,

check www.half.com for Gale Bernhardt's book.  I got it for around 6 bucks.  The plan that costs $30 online is in it.

I use the www.trainingbible.com and just chose one of thier plans by Gale Berhnart and then your whole training log is automated on their website so you do it and log it. Then you also get emails reminding you about what your workout is for the next day. I like that. I don't subscribe to the site just use the free stuff. I think you have to initially sign up then cancel withinn 7 days but you still get the benefit of the free log and calendars which I really like. I think I'm going to buy the book though with the multiple plans. My husband used the book Training Bible and it's wayyyyyyy over my head. He likes it though and I found some of his worksheets and all of the numbers and letters yadda yadda are too much for me. Just tell me what to do and I'm good takes hours to figure that stuff out yourself, I just don't hav time

I have both Gale's book (TPFMSA) and the new edition of the bible. I'm using the basic sprint program for my first race coming up, but I have been reading Friel's book. There's plenty of books that are on my wishlist for Christmas, though. The bible was a little over my head when I started reading it, but it's starting to make a lot more sense to me now. Maybe I'll use it to plan my training for next year. I would like to do a few tri's next year and some running races (5k's and 10k's), so who knows...

I know this is a very old thread, but I thought I would share the wealth.

I was looking for an electronic version of the Annual Training Planning sheet from TTB and wasn't having any luck.  So, I created my own on Excel.  I'll post it here in the hopes that someone else can use it.

So far, I grasp most of the concepts that he talks about but I haven't gotten to the weekly workout schedules yet.  I'll try to put the weekly workout forms here if I figure out how to put them in Excel.

I don't recall the details, but I think we got in trouble for this a while back.  (ie - copying TTB spreadsheets

Of course I could be on drugs and its not a problem.

Hmmm...I didn't realize and I meant no harm.  I didn't see a copyright on the page itself.  Likewise, the idea of a paper drill in a digital age seemed tedious.  There's really nothing in it to have stolen but I certainly don't want to violate copyrights.

If I done wrong, I apologize, really.  I was just trying to save a few trees and some time.

Yah, there was a thread a while back where some folks posted spreadsheets for TTB programs... Ron had to shut it down when Joe Friel himself (I believe) pointed out that sharing such things among folk who don't already own the book is a copyright violation... and there is of course no way to enforce the "you must own the book" part...

I'm using the plan myself... but only down to the weekly volume level. I had a hard time figuring out the details of the daily thing too.

My SS tracks the actual vs. planned volume and lets me see how I'm doing...

Too bad I can't share it (wouldn't be terribly useful anyway...)

If you look at the workouts in the back of the book, he lists which phases of training they should be done in.  I just consider what I think my weaknesses are and do the workouts listed in the book (or a reasonable facsimile of them)   that seem to target my weaknesses, along with at least one LSD (zone 1/2) session in each sport.  At least that's what I do when I have time to really sit down and plan.

This is my first season planning my own training, only my second season tri-ing so whether this works remains to be seen

When I frist read the book I had way to much information overload.  I worked out my plan then read the book again a few times until I finally understood his concept.

Someone made an excel worksheet out of all the plans: hours, annual, weekly, and workouts.

I modified them and made them automated to caculate the times and I have added the workouts to the right side so I know which workouts are scheduled for that week.  I try to balance the volume of hous so that bike is twice what the running or swimming is for that week. I try to follow each hard workout with a recovery workout or rest day (work induced).

If you want the spreadsheet which has all the charts that I made, just email me.

I just got to the part in the book to develop my annual plan. He refers to www.trainingbible.com, but now the webiste is different, and I couldn't find the online planner thing, just a bunch of coach information. Am I missing something?

H13, could you PM me about the spreadsheet you made?

Also, dgunthert, what progress did you eventually make (a year ago already!) and how did your annual plan help you?

Hate to be a wet blanket, but before this gets going I'm obligated to point out that this has been discussed before here and Ron heard from Joe Friel about it as there was information in the thread that was in violation of the copyright of the TTB.

comments from the previous thread by Mr Friel:

I have no problem with those who purchase my book making such copies for their own use. Distributing them to a mass audience without copyright information including the source, publisher and author concerns me. I would be less concerned if such information was included on their postings, but I would be highly concerned if those materials were used for profit.

Thanks for making your users aware of your terms of agreement.

Joe

I just removed the xls spreadsheet that was attached to one of these posts.  Discuss the TTB all you want, there just can't be any attachments of redisplayed info as of copyright restrictions.

Sorry.

I wasn't trying to resurrect a threat about copyright infringment, and frankly I was surprised that the Excel sheet was still attached as I was under the impression that Ron had ALREADY removed it. But maybe there was yet another thread on the topic.

What I was getting at, and perhaps I should just start a new thread, was...

1) about a website that Friel himself published in his book, which apparently has changed since it was published...wondering if anyone has found the information that Friel WANTS the book owner to use;

2) Dgunthert's experience after a year of using Friel's annual plan from the TTB and

3) Worksheets that H13 has created on his own

Thanks,
Suzanne
