Well, my bags are packed and we are getting ready to go on vacation/triathlon (triathlon first, just don't tell the family). We are going up to the Big Bear Mtns for the Lake Arrowhead Triathlon. The race should be good except I am a little nervous about racing at altitude. I looked at last years times and everybody was slow. I keep hearing horror stories about breathing up there, especially on the swim. I am so happy that all of my family will be there which is hard with 2 small children, but the race start is near our cabin and they have breakfast near the start, which was the deciding factor on the family going.
Other than that we will have one week in a cabin (again with 2 small children), so if you don't hear from me its either because something happened in the swim or my children drove me into the woods, never to be seen or heard from again.
take care and i will let you know how it went next Thurs.
Tom

Good luck to you, both in the triathlon and a week in a cabin with two kids. ;) I think it is wonderful your family will be there to cheer you on!

Hey Kim,
It is at 5100'. Which means absolutely nothing to me. What does that mean to you? Is that high? Will it be hard to race? Or is this just another BT Mole hill?

Wish you luck for what? The race or with the children for a week in a small cabin?

Good luck with both

Hey Tom,

Have a great race and rest afterward.

Hopefully your cabin has a porch you can sit on with a cup of your choice and reflect on your races to date.

It sounds totally fantastic to me.

Have fun, Race hard.

Roy

good luck!

5100 feet is fairly significant coming from sea level.  Hope it goes well!

Kick A$$ Tom.

As far as the altitude goes, I'm no expert, but -  I live at about 590'.    Went out to Montana in June, which was at 7,500 ft (Big Sky, MT). I was also very concerned about being able to breathe during a workout.  After couple of days I went running (up the mountain) to almost 9,000 feet. Really had very little problem (and I was even getting over illness).  So, there's my penny's worth.   I think if you have a few days to acclimate you'll be fine.

Good luck, Gary

Well, it's nothing to me, since I've lived between 5000 and 6000 feet all my life. But it'll be a little harder on you coming from so close to sea level. When I'm at low elevations, I feel so much stronger, but I don't really have any performance problems due to altitude until about 11000 to 12000 feet. Whatever that means....

The good news is that you won't be susceptible to altitude sickness, that starts at 7000' if you're going to get it. You'll be fine though, I know you train hard. What distance is it?

Good luck from here as well!

Altitude will affect each individual differently. I live at sea level (maybe even slightly below!), and do an annual bike ride around Lake Tahoe that starts at 6,200 feet and goe up from there. I've never felt any altitude effect, have even run ten miles or so while up there without any noticeable loss of stamina.

Other folks that have gone with me, though, have had noticeable problems.

Whatchagonnado? The tri is where it is, there certainly not going to move it down for you.

I'll echo Gary's sentiments, go kick some rarified a$$! I wish you the best. Do you have internet access in your cabin so you can give us the race report?

It is a 600 meter lake swim, 10 mile bike around the lake, then a 3 mile out and back run. I think with 2 days of vacationing ahead of me I will be a Clydesdale by race day, so that should cut down my competition a bit (I hope)

  • ..Oh and thank you everybody. I feel much better about the altitude thing.
  • Now if you have any suggestions about the kids!!!

I will definitely try and find a computer while up there. As LaraSD knows I can't live without my BT fix!
