Subject: sub bike for run ratio?
crashed on the ice over a week ago and my right foot was crushed under the bike. i could ride home and have been riding almost every day since. swimming is better than it was at first, but i'm still focusing on pulling and kicking off with my left foot. tried to run this week and ended up backtracking in the healing process.

my question - since i can bike pain free, if i have lets say a 30 minute run scheduled, what amount of time should i spend on the bike to make up the cardio time? i know the two are different, and i will get my foot xrayed next week if it is still hurting. in the meantime, i can spin. so, thoughts?

Bike fitness and running fitness are unfortunately two different things.
I would suggest water running which is the closest thing to running without the impact.
There is a video and article about water running on this site.
Good Luck and hope you heal soon.

I'm not quite sure it answers your question exactly, but this might be a start.  Per ST's Dan Empfield...

Race your strength, train your weakness, it is often said. If you're supposed to do as much or more in your weak event as in your strong, how does one know what more work is?

Over the years I've developed a system of points equivalency, and it works thusly:

1 mile cycling = 1 point
1/4 mile running = 1 points
100 meters swimming = 1 point

I've always heard it is a 3 to 1 ratio based on distance.   If you run 1 mile it is like the effort of 3 miles on the bike.  If you look at the calorie calculators, they seem to follow this too.

that's good advice.  You can't really "cross-train" for the run on the bike.  There will be some carry over, but not much.  I'd do the water running too.  Last year I was relinquished to the pool with shin splints and didn't lose much fitness even though I wasn't running.  I think it actually helped improve my running.

Now...if you are looking at this to improve your bike fitness.....
