Thanks for the responses everyone.  I am still amazed people can actually finish a HIM, let alone with decent times.

Did not finiish the first one after runner's knee flared about a mile into the run. Second one was 7 or so years later, and I thought I'd waltz in and do low five... Hubris. Problems in the swim, bike AND run left me at 5:50ish. It was fun to show up to the swim in my old flourescent blue/red/green wetsuit, among the sea of black sleek suits that are now the norm. I'm sure I looked "special", and coming out of the water 170 of 182 in my class proved it. The other highlight was the run where my 8:02-5 pace for the first 7 miles made me feel like a god (see, it pays to be well back in the pack!), but calf cramps ended that and reduced me to run/walk for the second half. Like most, I learned a lot and am thinking of doing that race again on May 5, with, once again, expectations of low 5 or better.

Duke Half in September 05  6:57.  Absolutely awful.  Feel free to go to my logs and read the race report.  First time I almost quit a race.  Was able to shave around 30 minutes off in 2006, goving for another 30 or so in 2007.  The run course and I have several issues to work out.

Did a 5:05 at SOMA last year.

First year of racing and after a angry swim w/a slow swim time... I flew on the bike but did not use proper nutrition and had cramps for the first 4 miles of the run. (Goal was to break 5 hours... I'll do that later this year at Buffalo Springs in my 2nd HIM... or will it count as my 4th HIM since I am stacking 2 together at IMAZ?)

This is a great post.  It's very inspirational to hear everyone talk about their first time, and how proud they are.  It makes me smile (nostalga).

Wow...I see trend here...why does everyone blow up on the run? How come nutrition is so hard to figure out? I do my first HIM in six weeks and think I have my nutrition plan down (fingers crossed).

First half was Gulf Coast in 2004 and I finished in 6:53. The run was torture as it was 94 degrees. My stomach also went haywire on the run. I spent alot of time working on improving my nutrition and I improved to 6:27 in 2005 and 6:19 in 2006. I did the full ironman there this year and now am debating whether to do the half again. As you can see from my times, I am not fast but I work hard to improve. For me, hitting my own goal is more important than my time. I don't think I can get much faster than 2006, but I still want to try!

This is very interesting for me..I'm doing my first HIM 9/23.

I have a rough goal time in my head but will adjust it as my training progresses. I like hearing what folks learned from their first HIM and hopefully I can learn something and maybe not have the same issues...nutrition is key and pacing as to not blowing up on the run.

My goal time and yours (generic you) probably should be vastly different...we have different skill sets, backgrounds, age, sex, so I see that as a personal thing. It is hard but important not to compare but do the best we can for ourselves. What I'd be thrilled to finish in, many of you have posted finished in that time and were bummed and disappointed.

Less than 13 days to my first HIM. As some of the posters mentioned, finishing with a smile is priority #1. My time goal for fun is 7 hours. My biking skills are seriously lacking.

If my legs heal up, I'll do my first HIM this summer.  I'm hoping just to finish in less than 8 hours.

I did 5:26 at SOMA last October.  This was my first HIM and first year of racing, but like others have stressed was my lack of nutrition on the bike.  I'll be doing IMAZ next month and have learned the importance of nutrition (sodium, carbs, hydration) on the bike and how it helps SOOO much on the run.

Good luck!

I'm hoping to do Moose Man (my 1st HIM), this June as close to 6hr or under as possible. I could give you a laundry list of excuses for not hoping for better but I won't because my first goal with any race is to:

1 - Get there and finish injury free
2 - Have a blast
3 - Collect another neat finsihing medal (bragging badges I call them)

Pretty much in that order.

6:15 @ Racine last year.

I had been training my red bike off (heh) and I was quite scared of the distance. Swim went well, I pushed the bike as hard as I could and figured I'd just suffer through the run... and I did. I had a chronic knee injury all last year... (not an excuse, just a fact) and I had significant pain on the run... but I knew my run would suck anyway, so I hauled off on the bike and figured I'd just EEEEEK it out on the run.

I was actually pretty proud of that time... I've had my knee fixed and I'm looking to improve upon it this year. Improvement in any increment is fine with me. Kiss

6:18, 5% slower than my "goal" (6 hours).  I wasn't real happy right then, but I consider it respectable now.  Finisher #712 (50th percentile) finished in 5:44.  Maybe he/she though their time wasn't "respectable."  It really depends on what your goal is, and whether you've trained properly to achieve your goal.  (I knew going in that I hadn't run as much as I should have.

6:19 at Timberman last year

My run went pretty OK (2:11) but I know I could've trained harder for the ride to go faster overall (3:14).   Getting a new bike given to me by a friend just a few weeks before the race was a blessing/curse in that I wouldn've loved more training time on it, but simply had to roll the dice.   The bike worked fine, but the rain and my unpracticed aero position didn't help much.

My computer is doing funky things today.  So here is my story behind my 5:35 at Steelhead in '06.

I was thrilled with the whole experience.  I went into it pretty intimated by the distance, but I let that help my performance not hurt it.  First, I did have time goals but I made them wide open.  I wanted to do it under 6 hours but I understood that might not happen and I would be a fool if I thought all that training was for nought because I didn't break 6 hours.  In the back of my mind, my "I would be ecstatic..." time was under 5:30.  The point here is I made the goals really wide because I had never done the distance and I didn't know what was going to happen.

The second thing I did was I used my head all day long.  I went out and did my normal slow swim (I'm working on that this winter).  On the bike, I kept telling myself, if you go too fast you could be cooked for the day, but if you go too slow you can probably get it back on the run.  So I probably went a little too slow on the bike, but I really think I did get it back on the run.  It was pretty hot on the run course especially considering there was almost no shade from mile 2 to 12.  My half marathon was under 2 hours which was pretty good that day.

The third thing I did was I followed my training plan almost exactly which included some training days several weeks out from the race which were not far from doing an HIM so while I had never done the distance I had come close enough that the whole nutrition thing was not that much of a stretch once race day arrived.

Sorry for tooting my own horn, but there were a lot of posts from people preparing to do their first and this is just one recipe that might allow for it to be a good day.  You should also notice while a lot of folks are saying they didn't like their time, you also didn't see one note saying "I would never do that again and I don't know why I did."

The finish line brings a great accomplishment.  Go for it, good luck and have fun.

Just looking towards a HIM in a year or two and wondering what a respectable finish goal is.   What was your first finishing time?

P.S.  To answer your question, you'll know better after an Oly Dist race, but if you can just double that time and finish the HIM, you'd have a respectable time IMHO.  Most people have to double + add 10-30 mins, or more.

gsmacleod - 2007-03-18 4:40 AM A respectable finish goal for a first long course race is getting to the finish line having enjoyed the race and with a smile on your face.

I'll tell you April 1 , but wanted to echo Shane's advice.  Yes, I have a goal time, and I have a dream goal time, but I really hope that doesn't interfere with my enjoyment, and I am not let down if I don't meet the goal.

Hell, I am a former couch potato that even as of last year avoided doing a particular tri because it had a 4 mile run, which was too long for me, and here I go with a half mary after swimming and biking.  I know it sounds corny, but I've worked damn hard to get to the point where even toeing the line is a possibility, and knowing I can go the distance, only question is how long it will take.

Anyway, this post is more for myself than anyone else at this point

First HIM was Diamondman in '05.  Finished in 5:17.  Like a lot of people, I suffered a bit on the run.  When people tell you to take it easy on the swim, don't push on the bike and hold back for the first half of the run, don't worry that you could be costing yourself time off your finish...listen to them.

Miami Man 06, 6:02:52 - S 0:43, T1 0:10, B 2:55, T2 0:06, R 2:08

I started training in May for it and was going for a 6 hours.  I had Transition total of 16:29 minutes, I used the facilities as there were right there!  I had a serious sinus/chest infection just 10 days before and hadn't swam for 6 weeks as I had a bike crash.  I didn't worry about things and was set to just have a good time and enjoyed whatever came my way.  I duplicated Bears nutrition plan which I'm sure he got from others and had a decent run given that it was sunny and pretty warm that day.

First HIM was Napa last May. Finished in 6:49, out of gas, but fairly happy with the result. Thought I'd have a better run than I did (2:26), but settled on run/walk after mile 5. In retrospect, that was the right move given the high temps and my total lack of understanding with respect to nutrition.

Second HIM is coming up on 3/31. My endurance base has deepend in the interim, but I'm also hamperd by a nagging injury (ITBS which crept up on me in the latter stages of LA Marathon training) which makes every run an adventure right now. Part of me thinks I should sit this one out, however another part feels I can finish without doing myself any long-term damage. Anyway, I made a commitment to a friend and pledged that I'd be there for the start. We'll see how it goes from there.

Still, it's necessary to revise my goals at this point. So, come 3/31 when the gun goes off (so to speak), you won't catch me looking at the clock. Instead, I'll be working to:

1) Appreciate the opportunity to exercise outdoors and test my fitness.
2) Enjoy the camraderie and support others who have worked their tails off to get there.
3) Find that feeling of sustainable performance, which many of us covet.
4) Remind myself of the other adventures which lay ahead.

I want to be active and fit when I'm 50 (I'm 36 now). Ditto for 60 and 70. Killing myself to get one result isn't the goal for me. Instead, I want this race to be part of a bigger picture so that I can look back in 20 years and say, "Half Irons? I guess I've been doing them for more than two decades now."

Have a good season everyone and remember, no matter what event you've set your sights on, it's just one day in a string of many. One race in (hopefully) a long list of memories and adventures.

Sorry for the "hippie" nature of this post, but i think the message bears repeating sometimes.

The main thing is making sure you get nutrition going early in the bike. I didn't and ended up having to scramble to keep the cramps away, only to find them returning at the beginning of the run.

You come out of the water and feel about the coldest part of the race. Wet with the wind from your bike speed cooling you down more. This causes you to not feel as though you need to do as much hydration and nutrition.

Make sure that you start at least 10 miles into the bike with your nutrition plan for the HIM. (at least my recommendation)
