This is an interesting thread. Of course the key is how you define "respectable," as so many have pointed out.

I'm facing my first 1/2 IM at Eagleman in June, and decided I wanted to hit 5:45. Why? It's exactly in the middle of my age group (M 45-49). Having decided that, I've tried to be smart about it. I started prepping well back in the fall, and have been working with a coach throughout.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm growing more and more confident because I'm putting in the time and effort to do the best I can. Even if it blows up in my face I know I'll be able to look back and know I've worked very hard at reaching my goal.

That's "respectable" to me -- knowing I've prepared myself to give it a good shot, and not going into the race just hoping for the best.

chris hughes - 2007-03-18 6:33 PM Wow...I see trend here...why does everyone blow up on the run? How come nutrition is so hard to figure out? I do my first HIM in six weeks and think I have my nutrition plan down (fingers crossed).

Some people may have nutrition issues.  But by far the biggest reason for "blowing up" on the run is going too hard on the swim/bike given the individual's run (and overall) fitness.  This is true at almost any distance.  It's not lack of bricks (though lack of running could certainly contribute), it's simply swimming/biking too hard.

Zackly.  I swam just like I should have, biked prolly 2mph harder than I was trained for, and my run splits were like 8, 8, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14....you get the idea.  Save something, at least first time around, until you know how to manage it.

Many experienced racers have mentioned how their first 1/2 IM experience has helped in subsequent races. I've never done this length of tri, but I have run 8 marathons -- any opionions on whether the pacing/mental aspects of doing marathons is an advantage in my first 1/2 IM?

(apologies for getting a bit off topic...)

Most people usually blow up during the run either because they raced at a pace faster that they trained, didn't trained enough or both. On the other hand an athlete in great shape, well trained and following the perfect pacing strategy might just blow up by screwing up the nutrition.

My first HIM time was measured with a sundial and a calendar. But I'll do things right this year and redeem myself come Oct.

Wow nothing but fastess on this site I swear. I am doing my first HIM. Training as hard as I can and I hope to do it in 7:59:59.

I do think though it is possible for me to do it in about 7:30 and I will try to go as hard as I can.

I think the reason most people blow it is the same reason I end up walking the last 4 miles of a marathon. You get catch up in all the excitement. You feel so string early because your so well trained that you put it all out there. Ironicly my best feeling I had at mile 20 of a marathon was one I went slow on the beginning. I felt I could have had a PR easy that day but my knee would not let me have it.

Your better off starting out too slow than too fast.

x2

This is primarily what humbled me during my first HIM - I went easy on the swim and what I thought was going to be easy enough on the bike, but ended up pushing too hard (I wanted to ride under three hours and started pushing the last quarter of the ride). As a result, instead of running at my training pace or better (5:30/km) I ran a minute slower per km costing myself at least twenty minutes on the run.

I like Max's quote and there was another by Gordo that I really like for the HIM - something along the lines of:

Let people go on the bike, you'll see them again on the run. If not, they were faster than you anyway!

1 st Levis last year 6:16

2nd Val d'or last year 6:05

3rd Montreal last year 5:35

But most important is to have fun and enjoy the ride!

Did 5:59 in Prairieman back in September.

Pushed too hard on the bike, didn't fuel enough on the run. Mile splits went from low 8s to 12 on the last mile. Had a HRM but hadn't done any LT testing at the point, so it turns out I was in Z3 and Z4 most of the bike and run.

Next time (in July) I'll play it smart and use those HR zones, especially with a full IM 2 1/2 months later.
