Subject: sodium supplements?
I had some nasty cramping issues tonight in my workout and it was probably a lack of sodium more than anything. Aside from dousing my food in salt on my harder workout days, anyone have any suggestions on sodium supplements that could fill in the gap?

I use NUUN.  Toss the tablets into a bottle of water. Instant electrolyte drink.  I use this to wash down gels, bars, and Perpetuem on long rides.

I use Nuuns as well in all my water bottles when working out even if they have Gatorade in them as I had lots of cramping issues last year.

I also take hammer endurolytes before I swim otherwise I get calf cramps. I have been working on improving calf strength and  cramping is better but today I didn't take them and end of my swim workout I had to stop for a couple of seconds with foot cramps.

Looking at your logs, it's pretty safe to say that you probably didn't cramp because of sodium issues.  It takes a lot longer workouts and prolonged sweating for you to alter your sodium balance to that degree.

Succed caps are probably the best out there. To much salt is harmful so make sure you do a sodium test to make sure you are getting the right amount in. E-caps are good but there is not the same amount in them. Gatorade endurance is great and a lot better then regular gatorade, whatever you do, do not dilute or add anything to the gatorade unless it is some type of carb drink like carbopro or anything similair. Gatorade is best digested as is with nothing extra added. Adding salt to your diet is also good but again make sure its the right amount. Weight loss and more fitness will also help. Also how was your hydration leading into the workout?

What do you think the issue was then?

The hydration was pretty good, I usually drink water regularly every day and I had my Camelbak with me on the bike portion so I didn't feel dehydrated at all. I was also munching on some Gu 'Shot Bloks' during the bike portion of the workout as well.

Hopefully the good doctor will give you his opinion, but I'll give it a shot in the meantime.  I'd guess you were suffering from muscle fatigue.  Rode hard on the bike, then hopped in the pool and began swimming at a good pace.

Many people blame lack of sodium, hydration, etc.  But the main cause of cramps is related to fitness.

I agree with Derek, the chances are slim that your cramping was due to sodium loss.

As to what might have caused the cramping, it looks like you did a hard run the day before and judging by some of your other bike rides, your bike pace prior to swimming was higher than average as well. Although the causes of muscle fatigue aren't 100% agreed upon, one that is often mentioned is muscle fatigue which could be the root of your issues in the pool.

I used the Hammer endurolytes last year and found them beneficial.  I have just ordered Nuun and have yet to encounter a workout that I have felt their presence (because it hasn't been hot enough to make me sweat much).
