Subject: Must See swimming videos!

I found these videos on youtube and they show in detail most aspects of proper freestyle swimming. For those seeking to improve their technique look at one of the videos, pick one or two things to work on and then head to the pool and focus your MS on those particular  thing(s), i.e. catch, pull, kick rhythm, recovery, etc. (don’t try to pick many and get all confused) Work on that specific one or two movement(s) for the entire week or two until you feel you have it right and imprinted and then try another one… Good luck and hopefully you’ll be swimming faster!

those are great Jorge.  Especially the first one.  I never realized that they kept their hands open when they swam.  I always keep mine bunched togethere thinking I can cup more water that way.

Must try this at swim practice tonight.

Good stuff.  Thing that jumps out at me is how he is ALWAYS looking down. Must work on that!

Look at those dogs!! It looks like Torpedo has fins on in the slow motion one...

I've been watching some of these to tweak my catch, I hadn't seen the end-on one yet, I like that.

amasing. maybe that is why I am so slow. I do 1 hand then I do the other. if I did both at the same time I should in theory double my speed. That is assuming I have rotated enough.

Man, the one of Popov is especially great. Makes me wonder what kind of pace he could keep for 1650m or so? Simply awe inspiring.

OMG - i have never seen anyone swim like that (not that i've seen a lot for sure) but OMG - they're bending their elbows under water, their heads are DOWN - wow, i'm swimming tomorrow night and can't wait to try this stuff out. Boy do I feel like an idiot - and i can relate to the person above - grew up in So Cal swimming all the time, thought it would be an easy part of Triathlons - NOT!

The one thing that struck me was how LITTLE these guys rotate their bodies compared to what TI preaches-- that you should strive to swim on your side. I've always suspected I was over-rotating. I'll have to try this.

TI is not bad - just all about comfort in the water.  The problem with the swim on your side approach is that you are spending more time rotating than you are in moving forward.  A little less rotation SHOULD mean that you can spend more time moving ahead.

Look at popov in teh first linked video at about 1:16 in the clip. He IS nearly on his side. It's just decieving because his head remains straight down. Look at teh line across his upper back that would connect his shoulders...it's closer to vertical than it is to 45 degrees. His recovering upper arm remains parallel to his upper back if you were to draw a line connecting the shoulder blades. That's some pretty serious rotation. The problem that most of us have is failing to coordinate the pull of the other arm so that movement continues FORWARD and not side to side. Body rotation is independant of forward velocity in the sense that both can occur simultaneously. The must of course, be coordinated with one another and in that sense are dependant on one another in terms of technique.

You're right. I see it there, but I DON'T see it in the hips, which is where I've also been doing it. I never knew rotation was limited strictly to the upper back and shoulders before. I've been rotating through the hips so that I'm actually kicking to the sides. I guess I've been really screwed up.

Hmm... I feel a bit confused so maybe someone can help me out on a couple of things. And maybe it's just different styles or me not seeing it correctly, but:

a) I've been told to enter my hands straight out from the shoulders (or 11 and 1) to increase efficiency and these guys seem to enter at the midline

b) I've been told to enter your hand close to the goggle line to initiate more glide and these guys "seem" to reach pretty far out ahead

c) It also looks like they are kicking from their knees as opposed to their hips?

In order to better my technique, I've been working on these 3 things per instruction of a coach. And now seeing that these guys don't do any of them...am I missing something (quite possibly)?! THANKS!  Wow regardless, it's AWESOME to watch these guys swim.... wew!

 I was wondering about the exact same things.  When I've been looking at (b) and the reaching, they still seem to have forward motion with their hands and a bit of glide...so maybe it's to do with swimming at another level?  I'd love to hear a swimmer's response to this.

The knee kicking thing really threw me off...they're all doing it and it was one of the first habits my coach made me break.  What's up with that?

Just because their knees are bending does not mean they are initiating the kick with their knees. Imagine snapping a towel like you used to do at teh pool as a kid. The towel is supple and flexible. The snap is initiated at your wrist and the towel unfolds and the tip whips forward with acceleration. That's comparable to what you're seeing in the videos. the kick is initated at teh hips as you can tell because their upper legs are moving up & down. Their legs are very supple and the knees bend in repsonse to the force generated from the hips. The knees then straighten and "whip" forward with the ankle joint and foot following last creating a lot of forward propulsion.

At least that's my take on it. I certainly wouldn't use these videos to revert back to "kicking from the knees" unless you want to take your swimmign skills several steps backwards.

b) I've been told to enter your hand close to the goggle line to initiate more glide and these guys "seem" to reach pretty far out ahead >>> that's a TI thing which I personally dislike. The way I've been able to generate more forward momentum is by entering the water ahead of my head and I am not seeking to glide per say. I am more trying to extend one arm as forward as possible while my opposite arm is pulling my body forward. As soon as that opposite arm begins to come out of the water (elbow 1st) I began the catch water with my extended arm and pull myself through the water.

c) It also looks like they are kicking from their knees as opposed to their hips? >>> It might seem like it but they have great leg flexibility. Is like they are whipping instead of kicking and it is all one big movement started from the hip and goes through the knee and end on the feet/ankle with incredible elasticity

Thanks, these are very helpful.

I saw someone at the Y yesterday who was crossing over so hard that her hands were at 10 and 2 on the OTHER sides. It made me conscious of my own crossing over. I should shoot her these links!

I want to find sometime when the pool is not very crowded and have someone (only my wife is kind enough) shoot some video of me swimming so that I can break down my form. I'm sure it would not be pretty.
