Subject: 20-wk HIM training plan: rest days??
Following the other thread on the beginner HIM training plan, I've got a question on the (non-beginner) 20-week HIM plan: where are all the rest days??? Is it intentional that there's only one rest day in the first and third months? Or are we meant to shuffle workouts in order to take our weekly rest day and still get in all the runs, swims, bikes, etc.

And, more generally, what have people thought of this plan? I'm going to use it (starting in a couple of weeks) to train for the Big Kahuna HIM in September, and am wondering if anyone has tips, suggestions, words of caution... Thanks!

My understanding on the BT plans is that they are more time oriented.  No one is expected to make 100% of the workouts.  Instead, it is a plan to guide you regarding how much you *should* be training each week.  I certainly mixed my up to accomodate for personal needs.

It is intentional.  You're not intended to shuffle the workouts.  But if you need a rest day, take one.

I haven't used that plan though (used the Oly-to-Half Bridge--which does have weekly rest days--lat year).

Actually, I think the plan in question is written with the assumption that you ideally execute 100% of it.  However, that doesn't mean you couldn't adjust/modify it to accomodate personal needs as you noted.

I used that plan last year for my 1st HIM. The main problem I had with it was that every weekend is a long ride one day and a long run the next or vice-versa. By the end I was really burned out on training since it would effectively eat up all of my weekends (I felt like I had no time for anything other than training), so that's something to watch out for.

Is that why following the plan 3 weeks I just had no more energy to go on with it? Man I never knew that.

Good point. I also try to give my legs a rest between long runs and long rides, so it sounds like some adjustments will be in order there.

why question is why the rest? Sure tehy would be tired but you have to bike 56 miles and then run 13.1. they do not even give you 1 day between those.

Yeah, but you only do that once, not every weekend.

I am using the 20 week HIM plan and modified it slightly to fit my time schedule and my body needs.  For my long workouts I do my long bike on Sat and my long run on Sun.  granted it doesn't give my legs a chance to feel "fresh" but I want to know mentally that I can still do well on race day becasue I have pushed myself during training.  Also, when I rearranged the training plan, I gave myself EVERY Monday off.  SOmetimes I will go swim if I haven't got the volume in that I wanted to in the prior week, but usually no running/biking on Mondays.

That is TOTALLY untrue.

Rest is for the LAZY.  Slow is for the weak.

No rest + long/intense workouts = Burnout(injuries) / Lots of spare time to support your friends.

Take your rest days. Rest on your rest days. You should get one per week, under normal circumstances.

While good advice in general (esp. for beginners), there is no magic formula that says how many or how often you should take rest days--under "normal" circumstances or otherwise.  If you can recover day-to-day and week-to-week (physically and mentally), you may need very few (or none).

Mentally I'm not a fan of rest days (I get antsy). Physically, though, I'm sufficiently injury-prone that it's best that I take them, usually one per week.

Thanks for the help, everyone!
