FIRST EVER RUN OVER 10 miles!!! Ran 11 miles in 2:00:32. Holy crap--I never thought I'd get to 5 miles when I started doing this last April. I'm still not a great runner (Read Fast) but I'll take it.

I'm sitting here looking at the wallpaper of race numbers next to my desk. My first one is from the Big E Road Race March 25th of last year. I only ran the 3k portion of the run because I was intimidated by the idea of a full 5k. Three weeks later, I ran my first ever 5k, the Bunny Hop 5k (Manly name--lots of pink on the t-shirt too) in a blistering 36:06. I can remember thinking that I would be happy to get comfortable with the 5k distance and that even a 10k seemed too much to take on. Less than a year later, I'm two weeks away from my first half-marathon. That's probably a slower progression than most people but I've never been a strong runner. This is a HUGE success for me.

Yesterday I went to put on a spare uniform belt that has been hanging in my work locker for a while. I tried to buckle it and found that even the smallest opening wasn't even close to being tight on me. One year ago, I weighed around 245lbs, was at 23% body fat, and wore 38/40 waist pants. Now, I'm at 222, 16% body fat, and 34's are starting to have a little room.

Two years ago at this time, I still had 3 more chemo treatments to go. Last year, I was 6 weeks away from getting remarried to the woman who put up with me all thru 8 mos of chemo. This year, I'm starting my first full triathlon season. It's amazing how much has changed in one year. I can't wait to find out what the next year has in store for me!

Wow - congratulations!  I was going to give you big ups for the first 10 mile run (I was stoked when I hit that too, also in the slower aisle of the running supermart), but you've got lots of bigger things to be proud of too!

Awesome work, Eric!!!! Keep it up.  It's a blast racing and training with you.

And you forgot to mention the minor fact that you and your wife are about to bring a new addition into the triathlon world!!!  Quite a change in a year!

Congratulations on "living strong". You have earned the right to call yourself an "athlete" . Best of luck on your upcoming races.

thanks for sharing that! Yeah, it is amazing what the body can do once we put our mind to it! I could barely run a mile or 1/2 mile for that matter! or swim  2 lengths of the pool last June myself.

You are an inspiration!

Wow! Congratulations. You've come a long way. And to me, that IS fast for 10 miles. What an inspiration.
