Subject: Real time WWBT do question

Ok...I'm at the house and am getting furniture delivered.  I have a two story victorian which means an open but tight staircase in the front. (3 steps, landing, turn, 2 steps, landing, turn, 11 steps, landing turn, 3 steps 2nd floor)  this also means that the movers have to be careful of the woodwork and ballists.

I'm getting a queen size bed, vanity, 2 chest of drawers, night stands upstairs.  Downstairs a table, 6 chairs and a wall size china cabinet.

Here is my question:  We got a queen size mattress and box set which is in the foyer, which I would like to end up upstairs.  I was thinking of tipping them $50 not only for delivering the furniture (which I paid a delivery fee for) but for putting the mattress and box set upstairs.

Is $50 good for 2 people?  And should I give them less if they choose not to take the mattress and box spring (which they are not delivering) upstairs for me?

Hold out the 50 while standing next to the pieces and say "Could I get you guys to move these upstairs for me, it's going to be a (rhymes with itch)  by myself."

If you have 2 20's and a ten and they say no, then take a 20 back.  But they won't say no.  I guarantee it.

Just ask directly..."Hey, for $50 can you guys move these up for me as well?"  At the end, if everything went smooth, give 'em $60.

If they won't or say they can't, but do a good job, I'd tip $20.  At least that's what I've tipped in the past.

But then they might be thinking "Thanks for the 50 for moving the stuff upstairs, where's the tip for the delivery?"

I thought they are supposed to deliver the set to where it is supposed to be located - in your case, the upstair bedroom.

I don't know, but they brought the mattresses/bed frames into the bedrooms of mine and all of my friends'.  I used to live in a townhouse with narrow stairs against the wall.  Stair is slightly to the right of the main door.  Weird angle.  There was only one delivery guy and he said "I assume the bedroom is upstairs" and proceeded heading toward the stairs.  I helped him pushed the stuffs up the stairs.  When I had my sleeper-couch delivered, the first thing the delivery guys asked was "where does this go?"

Our friends helped us bring the mattress home yesterday.  They furniture delivery guys didn't deliver the mattress.

Each guy makes only about 15% of the price you pay, they would be pretty dumb to not do it.  Moving a matress and box springs is less than $5 in their pocket if you do it through the company.

I tipped our carpet installers to bring a sofa sleeper down a very tight staircase. I went to them when they were about done and held out 2 20s and asked if they wanted to make a quick extra 20 to bring the sofa down. They were all over it. Took less than 10 min.

I recently bought a box-spring and mattress, and delivery was included.  As mentioned above, they asked "where's this go?" and put it into our bedframe in the bedroom.  And yeah, we live upstairs, too.  They don't just leave things on the curb.

I suggest holding your cash and only offering if they hesitate.  Otherwise you're going to likely be tipping them generously for something that is already part of their job.  And if you did see that a tip was somehow expected, $10 each would suffice.  It's not like they're heaving it up 5+ flights of stairs...

Dan - whadja do and how'd it work out?

Well, here is how it played out.  Note that the mattress and box spring had nothing to do with the store delivering the furniture.  Two completely seperate items.

When all the stuff was put together he had me verify that they had done everything correctly.  He stayed down stairs as I went upstairs and checked things out.  When I came down stairs to sign the paperwork, I looked him in the eye while holding a $50 bill in my hand, "It would really help me out if these mattresses could make their way up stairs."  He smiled and said, Not a problem.

AND...here is the bonus.  When we were signing the paperwork, he said, "You'll notice that you got two captain's chairs (formal dining room chair with arms) instead of just the one your ordered.  There is a $30 difference between a side chair and a captain's chair. [slight pause]  But I guess a mix-up at the Warehouse shouldn't cost you."

So I think this was a win-win for everyone.  Good thing I had that $50 on my nightstand and never took it to the bank.

I think you know how to make $40 in a pinch if you really need to.

In normal font, that would be encouraging.  In sarc font, it's just plain wrong.
