Subject: 105 STI Shifters with Ultegra Derailleurs

Can I use Shimano 105 STI shifters with Ultegra derailleurs?

I want to get a set of drop bars for my Cervelo Dual.  I found a great deal on a set of 105 10-speed shifters.  The 105 front shifter also works with either double or triple.  With ultegra you have to buy a completely different model if you want to switch to triple.  So 105 seems like it would give me more flexibility then Ultegra in case I ever want to throw a triple on.

I'm not an expert mechanic, but I believe you can, as long as they are for the same number of gears i.e. you can't mix old 9 speed shifters w/a new 10 speed derailleur. If they synch up gear-wise, you should be fine.

That's what I've got on my Cannondale R700.  Works fine.
