Does anyone have a hitch bike rack which holds 4 bikes and swings down from the back so that you can open up the rear door of the car? I'm looking for a rack and was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Sweet! I was looking at the Yakima and the Thule's. I did see one online that folded down keeping the bikes perpendicular to the ground, which looked like a great design...i'm not sure how durable it would be though.

here is the one i found online:

just wondering how and if it were worth getting, and if mountain bikes would be able to fit on it?

I have the same rack that Aaron does, the Yakima Kingpin 4. It's great. I only keep mounts for 3 bikes on it though because that is the max that I usually carry and it makes it easier loading and unloading.

I've got the Yakima FullSwing 4, and it works great.  It's heavy as heck, but I don't install/uninstall it that often.  It's great being able to swing the bikes out (versus tilting down -- means we don't have to unload the bikes) when we need to dig through the bags during rest stops on long trips.

I bought my Thule T2 from Maupin Trailers. They seem to have the best prices on racks that Ive found. Here is a link to one that is similar to the one you posted and its 130.00 cheaper.

Sorry, I didn't see this post earlier but I hope my input helps you out.

I have a Saris CycleOn. It came with another bike rack attachment that fits an additional 2 bikes (4 total). I drive a SUV and I do not notice any changes in the performance of my SUV (some hitch mounted racks change the feel of the car especially if you don't have a big vehicle).

It is VERY sturdy and durable. It is well made and heavy- heavy enough that my 225 pound fiancee can stand on it and clean the roof of my SUV. The bikes stay on the rack by a ratcheting arm system on the tires.

You can buy a hitch lock for it but I just use a Master Lock Python to secure them to the hitch. You can lift your rear door up if you have a liftgate. If you have a tailgate, it may open but that would depend on the vehicle you have.

If you do decide to get a hitch mounted rack that folds up, I would suggest getting reflective tape from an auto parts store just to keep from someone getting too close to you and hitting your rack while it is folded up.

Hope this helps

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I just went to REI and bought the Thule Revolver which holds 4 bikes and swings away from the car so that you can have access to the rear door. It is on sale now for $335 at REI which is I believe a 20% discount from what it typically is. Of course whenever i go it there it is far more expensive than I plan...bike rack, new helmet, mtn bike shorts, and the same for my gf...

oh well, they are all great investments, and heck why not?
