Subject: Bike gear question - need to ID
1 - I'm looking for info on what gears I have on my bike. Do I count the gears and do some kind formulation that would make NASA geeks proud or is it easier than that?

2 - Need to know what certain gears are for (ie. X cassetts are for hills, Y cassetts are for underwater exploration etc.)

3 - Also, could you share a link or two on bike tech/tips, etc. I remember there is one fellow with a good site on maint/tech stuff.

Thanks for any help

edit: cause I can't speell

Eddie, I know just enough to get myself in trouble but I think this is the site you're referring to:

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/

don't know why it didn't show as link... I hate that! sorry

guess I could add that my Cervelo comes w/ an 11/23 cassette and I'm swtiching to a 12/25 to help w/ the climbs at Harriman. The higher the top number the easier it is to pedal. Some go as high as a 27. Not sure why I didn't Embarassed Hope that helps, even a little.

That be the site and yes, your response helped oh-bunch.

BTW - reading your blog about you getting those cassettes is what motivated this thread.

For working on your bike, go to the Park Tools website.

Not nearly as complicated as you guessed; you can stop after you count!  An 11-23 cassette will have 11 teeth on the smallest cog and 23 on the largest.

It really is that simple.  The gear sizes are listes as number of teeth on the cogs.  Just count em.

to make it even easier...

the number is usually stamped on the individual cogs....

...so you dont have to count em....although sometimes its hard to see when its all together on the bike...
