Here's a little blurb about some guy in Utah that got notified by a news crew already.  It actually says 6,600 people signed up for the lottery.  That is the first time I've seen a number without a "I've heard from a guy, who knows a guy..."

High 5: Utah Triathlete Selected for Ironman Competition
April 12th, 2007 @ 6:41am

(KSL News) It's an honor that every triathlete dreams of: being selected to race in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.

One local athlete, Geoffrey McCombs, received that honor this morning when our Coco Warner showed up at his home for what he thought was a segment on training tips. Instead, Coco gave him a High 5 and told him he's been selected to participate in the Ironman World Championship.

"Oh my gosh!" McCombs said. "I can't even believe it. That's incredible."

"I've been in triathlon for five years and that has been a dream ever since I got into the sport," he said. "This is incredible. I never thought I'd get into the lottery. I never thought they'd draw my name. Wow!"

McCombs will be one of just 200 triathletes competing in the Ironman World Championship in October. Over 6,600 athletes entered their names in hopes of being selected.

I saw the Utah story, but I don't think that's the lottery. I think it's the 'IMG/NBC' category, for the TV and VIP folks. Just a gut feeling, based on the story. I'm holding out hope it's Sunday as well.

I'm pretty sure that is the lottery.  They tell some people on their local news for PR purposes that they were picked.  So they seemed surprised they have to do this ahead of the time they post the list with all the names.

Edit - but there is a damn good chance I don't know what I am talking about.

yeah I do not think everyone one of us who wins the lottery will be on tv. that would just be silly. There was a reason for it and unless WTC is utah based I would think it would have something to do with NBC.

Perhaps - but why would NBC pick a Geoffrey McCombs (or whoever he is) with one of their spots?  They didn't mention he is racing for any special cause.  Does he have 6 legs?

A little math fun using the number 6,600 with the 2004 stats that were posted in the other thread.....

I have read about this somewhere in a magazine. They reserve the right for their sponsers and T.V. (NBC or whoever airs it) to select people for the race. Since most of the dramatic stories come from lottery hopefuls instead of people who quailify, thats where they look because you have to do a 1/2 even if you are picked within one year. I read this just before I entered (again ) and if you rememeber during the process they ask you a ton of questions about past inspiration, something that has happened in your life, special achievments, etc. That is for the people that get to pick. You can bet that if you put down a "Cause" , or have a "comeback story" etc., it WILL be looked at and you stand a better chance of making it in. Look at the past several races and all of those "highlighted" athletes that are featured. I dont know of any of them that actually qualified in their age group. But they had a story, reason, or cause for why they were doing it. I was actually depressed after I filled mine out because there is nothing special about me other than I want to do it !!!

Now, whether they are from the lottery slots or not????.....................

  • .....now?

  • Oh well, traffic is bad. I'll just practice my look of surprise and Kona wave.

I am in! I have a sprint at 6:15 so hopefully get the email right before I hit the waterTongue out

I am not an employee or associate of the WTC.  What I can tell you is that, some lottery spots are announced before the "official" announcement.  Nothing like good publicity.  It's a random drawing, certified by an accounting firm.  So the stories really don't matter except when it comes to possibly being on TV or in the news.

    Aloha,

    Matt

I know the lottery is over, but how do you go about getting into the lottery. Do you just have to join the passport club, or do you have to do something else?
