I'm a 28yo MinnesOtan, decided to finally start training for a triathlon. I'm sure there are a bunch of others who live in colder climates. My question is how do you training during Nov-Feb, indoors only, in- and outdoors? Running outdoors is possible, but what about biking, ice cleats? Is indoor biking comparable to outdoor, or is there some type of conversion/fudge factor one must assume? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the the T-Spot!  I don't live in a cold climate, but I can tell you that we switch over to riding trainers in the winter and riding mountain bikes. Riding indoors is a lot different than riding outdoors because you don't have the resistance that you would have from the wind and from the terrain.

Welcome!  I use a bike trainer in the winter, and go out when possible.  Good luck training!

I've read that "cross country skiing" is a great way of conditioning in place of biking, during the colder months (Jan Ulrich). You get a lot of snow out your way?

Hi and welcome nmevedoc. I live just above you in Manitoba, so weather is likely pretty comparable. I ran outside through the winter last year and learned to love it. Definitely invest in some ice grippers to slide on over your shoes, and a few layers of wick-a-way type clothes with a breathable wind breaker, and then just enjoy the serene and private world of snow-runs. It is worth keeping a journal at first to keep track of what layers you need for what temp, and windchill.

I do see diehards biking still, but since I can't claim to have ever tried it, nothing to offer there!
