NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Swimming teachers and other people who spend a lot of time near chlorinated pools face an increased risk of breathing problems, Dutch researchers report.

Chlorine reacts with substances such as urine and sweat to create byproducts that can irritate the respiratory tract, most importantly chloramines, explain Dr. Jose Jacobs of the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands and colleagues in a report in the European Respiratory Journal.

The research team surveyed 624 swimming pool employees and sampled air at six swimming pools. They measured trichloramine levels at all 38 pools included in the study to estimate long-term exposure among employees. Trichloramines are the most volatile type of chloramine, and are known to irritate the eyes and upper respiratory tract.

Compared to pool workers with the least exposure to trichloramines, such as catering employees or receptionists, swimming instructors were 2.4 times as likely to suffer frequently from sinusitis or sore throat, and faced a 3.4-fold greater risk of chronic cold, the researchers found.

Employees with high levels of exposure were at greater risk of a number of other respiratory symptoms compared to the general Dutch population, ranging from a 40 percent increased risk for tightness of the chest to a more than sevenfold greater likelihood of suffering breathlessness while walking with a person of the same age.

People who reported excessive humidity or inadequate ventilation at work were also more likely to report breathing problems.

Trichloramine exposure is the most likely explanation for the breathing problems identified in the study, given that levels poolside can be three times higher than the established comfort level, the researchers write. The chemicals could boost a person's risk of asthma, allergies and other breathing problems, they suggest, by making the airways more permeable,

Health and safety regulations for chlorinated pools address water quality, but not air quality, Jacobs and colleagues point out. One possible way to reduce levels of trichloramines might be to improve hygiene among pool users, they add, although enforcing compliance could be difficult.

guess it jsut goes to show how danger it is for people to pee in the pool, all those clowns who come in and jump in with all there sweetie work out clothes on, or people who use it to cool off after using the sauna.

You don't need to worry about it. There are so many people spending so much time in the pool that if there were common complications more serious than colds and swimmers ear we'd know about them. I've known a ton of 4 hour a day swimmers, including some with CFibrosis and COPD, none of them have had any problems.

If you're still concerned, look for a pool with a UV light filter - they're able to use far less chlorine since they shine UV on tubes and filter the pool water through them for part of the day.

its more health hazzard for the people who work at them then use them. your not spending 30 - 40 hours a week at the pool maybe around 6 at most hours a week.

There is a new study every week that says something is bad for you....

I'd rather wear out than rust out...

Is it more dangerous for us to be an inactive society, tossing out all of our training, and going back to being couch potatoes, waiting to die of a heart attack?  Personally, I'll take whatever dangers may come from swimming regularly.  THanks!  :D

I received this study in one of my sports medicine email subscriptions and decided not to share it with the group as it's essentially irrelevant for us.

I agree for the most part except that I do think we have a responiblity to make sure we enter the pool nice and clean and not pee in it. We can use it as a tool to keep people using the pool as a bath tub or atleast get the lifeguards to better ensure there own safety.

Ok ok sweety people who jump into the pool with there workout clothes on is a real let peave of mine.

I've been a lifeguard/swim instructor for 20 years. Spent the last 8 at a poorly ventilated, indoor facility. The only breathing problem I have is in the fall when the ragweed is present. Guess I wasn't a part of the study. My thoughts are that we are all terminal and no one gets any guarantees so use your life wisely.

I spend something like 300 hours in or around a pool every winter.. and I have asthma. I've only ever had breathing problems... twice I think? I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It could be a concern to be exposed to chlorine and chlorine gas.  I've never had asthma problems around the pool with chlorine gas, although I have had problems in my chemistry classes.  Of course, it was a lot more concentrated than anything near the pool.  Some people are more sensitive to it than other people.
