There might be a slight silver lining to this story.  When the game was played (by the way Chucky, I watched the semis and the finals start to finish because the games were good.), all that people saw was some great basketball players.   A few moms and dads in the stands, a few commercials with the girls with their game faces on.   But not the back story.   When I heard Imus' quote, I commented that these girls are not nappy headed ho's (if any such thing even exists), they are the best and brightest of their communities.  So the good thing that has happened is that several stories have been carried on the national news about the Rutgers' women's  many, many accomplishments off the court and several interviews have been given in which they showed their intelligence and character.  Good game, ladies.

anyone else intrigued by that fact that we have 50 posts in this thread, and to my knowledge, not a single black person much less a black woman?

We need more black female triathletes, I guess.

I get really ticked when people say "Get over it" or "let it go". Letting it go is just another way of saying, "get back to the kitchen, uppity woman!". When women are told to not get upset about words that are DEMEANING, that's when we start accepting it, accepting that we are just "hos". So what should we do? Curl up in a ball and let them kick us? That's what happened for ...well...almost all time. I really wish there was MORE of an uproar from women.

And then of course things get thrown back in our faces. Title IX, scholarships, etc. "You have so much to be thankful for! So shush about this thing and just take it!"

I gotta go to class. Grr.

Really, putting that it was a black womens team he made the comment about aside, calling anyone a nappy headed ho is a put down, cut down, or whatever, no matter who you are. So regardless, its nothing that he probably should have said on radio. But as someone else stated, its the radio shows final say in his punishment, and its everyone elses responsibility to not listen to him after the suspension is over if you dont agree. And if it hurts their ratings enough, they may change their tune on his punishment. But if he keeps bringing people in, he'll stay

they are the best and brightest of their communities.

I don't condone what Imus said, but this is a stretch. Best? At hoops, I'll give you that.

Brightest? At Rutgers? I think not. A quick look at their bio's and only two are singled out for their  acededmic  accomplishments (and one happens to be white). all the others are "enrolled at Rutgers College" including the other white player.

Let the media make them something they are not. I'm not buying it.

i don't know why anyone isn't calling for these basketball players to apologize both for being black and for being women. had they not had the poor judgment to be one or both of these two things, we wouldn't be talking about this. i mean, they were practically asking to be called "nappy headed hos" by having the nerve to be women and to be black.

and since some rappers have used the term "ho" before, then these women clearly have no right to complain. those other people's actions forfeited these women's right not to be demeaned on a nationally syndicated and broadcast show.

Well, I don't have any ide who is black and who is white (unless someone says "as a black man... " or "as a white man...."    To your question, actually, no.  I see very few black triathletes in general.

to reiterate:  Imus is an idiot and made an offensive remark.  Sharpton, apparently standing as a self appointed leader of the black community, says Imus should be fired for using these words.  Sharpton is subject to criticism as being a hypocrit if he applies different standards to different colors of people.

Not sure where your conclusion came from.

Yeah, I got that.  jimbo can speak for himself, but I believe his post was intended to imply that since some people, myself included, have posted that rappers use these demeaning terms and are not called on the carpet for it, we believe that the players cannot be offended.

That misses the point (not to mention misstates the argument)

If I misinterpreted jimbo's post, I apologize.  Don't think I did

sorry, did i need to use the sarc font? my point is the absurdity underlying some of the statements being made (howard kurtz on CNN this morning) that b/c the term "ho" is used in rap, and black people listen to rap, that imus just can't be blamed, or that what imus said has to be put in some other context. the fact that some rappers use certain terms has nothing to do with what imus said. that was my point.

Black and white issues aside.... why do we as a society go after a racial slur as in the case with Imus (white person said it about a black person) but not do anything about race/race slurs?

Rap music comes to mind... nothing nice said in much of the lyrics ...but no one is up in arms about that they listen to derogatory songs about African Americans.. many times women... written and sung by African Americans.

Trust me, I got the sarcasm.  I never thought that was your opinion.

Sorry, since you didn't use the CNN reference in your original post, I thought you were referring to posts made in this thread, including mine in which I pointed out Sharpton's hypocrisy for not calling out black people that use the same words to describe black women that Imus used, which words Sharpton found degrading.

I agree that the argument in your post is a non sequitur and ridiculous.

well, there was this thread:
http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid...

remind me-- which nationally syndicated program does nick saban have? which network does he do a simulcast for every day? which politicians, pundits, and journalists go on his show?

also, i would think that the differential experiences of cajuns and black women in america has something to do with the different response.

and note that i'm not passing any judgment on what saban said, just considering reasons for the different levels of reaction.

The thread didn't say much.  What he does for a living is irrelevant.  He's a public figure.  The experiences of Cajuns in this country have been pretty miserable in the not too distant past.

Blah.

Some people would find your post highly offensive.  Not the same folks who are so offended on this thread though.
