Hello! First off, this is such a great site. I am a total tri beginner and need all the help I can get. I am not sure whom to thank, but THANK YOU for such a wonderful resource and tool.

I am a 47-year-old female who was active (swim team) during her youth. Long story short….. I blossomed to be 100 lbs overweight and recently diagnosed with diabetes. I have been able to avoid medication by controlling my diet and exercising. I started 8 months ago walking 3 miles 3x per week. I got back into the pool 6 weeks ago and have been able to work my way up to swimming a total of 1500 yards using a mix of breast stroke, crawl and some kick boarding. I swim about 3 or 4 times a week. I have not taken the bike plunge yet, but do 30 minutes of stationary bike 2x a week.

My goal is to participate in a sprint triathlon on 08/15/05 here in Seattle, Wa. I have a lot of pounds to lose, but have already started to shed some off with the exercise.

My major concern is not my weight, ( I know it will come off with training) but with another illness that I have which causes extreme fatigue. Chronic Hepatitis C. It’s a struggle, but I am keeping my hopes up that I will be able to reach my goal of participating in the triathlon next year. So far so good. I do not notice any extra tiredness from the extra excercise efforts. In fact, I probably feel better than before.

I look forward to reading some of the other successful tri stories for inspiration.

Great start with the swimming and walking.  I don't know anything about hepatitis and exercise.  But I cheer for anybody that will take her health seriously and do something positive. Yay, Kepola.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I am nervous about the running. Is it common for tri participants to walk/run the last leg of the event?

Wow, joined a Masters swim group. After my first practice session, I feel much more slippery in the water. My swim workouts should now be a lot more robust thus aiding my weight loss quest. Can't wait to start running, but need to shed a few more pounds first. I will let you guys know when I take those first non-walking steps.

What does it cost to get into a master's class?

If you don't have a member to a specifi pool where they are being taught do you normally get deals?

Anything else anyone can tell me, because I feel like I am at a plateua with my swim.

Welcome to the site. You are right, the weight will come off with training. I have now lost 60 pounds with another 20 or so to go....I've done 2 sprints this year (with one more to go) plus some 5 and 10K's.

My best advise is to train smart, which means watch your nutrition closely, listen to your body and stay injury free. It is easy to over-do-it early on just because of the way you feel about training and getting ready to race. BTW, you will probably want to find an ealier race, I did, once I got the "race" fever this spring. Maybe check out a 5K race that is close by for you.

Good luck with your training and weight loss.

Welcome! Your diabetes will continue to improve as you lose weight and become fitter. You have taken the right step in recognising that you have some control of the progression of this disease and I commend you for it. Re the HepC you can use coarse measures such as your level of fatigue to monitor your progress but you would probably be better served by regular blood tests - you would be having regular glucose testing anyway so liver function tests (LFTs) will give you a quantitative measure of how stressed your liver is. Have you had a cholesterol check too? How is your blood pressure? You probably should get good baselines now on your general state of health and have them all repeated in about 3 months time. Re starting to run can I recommend that when you feel ready to progess from walking to running that you do the walk-run thing and if you start to get some impact effects (sore shins or knees) try deep water running and pool walking to condition yourself. You could do that anyway instead of land based. It will take time for it all to come together and don't expect to keep improving in a linear fashion - you will have ups and downs - just keep focussed on the bigger picture Dx

Thanks for all the replies and encouragement.

Dx-yes, I have regular blood tests for both diabetes and hep C. I also get liver biopsy every couple of years to monitor the damage to my liver. My doctors are amazed at my ideal cholesteral and blood pressure results. We monitor regularly, but thank you for the reminders to check. Yep, I do the running in the pool thing. And I will also do the walk/run routine as you suggested.

FatMan-To combat the fatigue and disease I eat as healthy as possible (oraganic, so my liver doesn't have to work hard to filter out toxins and chemicals) and take as many naps as I can fit in to my daily schedule. I go to bed early, even on weekends.

Welcome Kepola. I am a newbie too. I just started training about a month ago. It's amazing how quickly you will build your endurance. Keep it up and stay healthy. That is the most important part!

I've used the treadmill once or twice a week to try and improve my times. Plus, it can be a little easier on the knees sometimes than concrete! Nice going on the swimming!
Good luck.

Hi Kepola - welcome, and congrats on the training, and excellent attitude. We have a few things in common... I just joined BT.com this week, and am very excited about using this wonderful resource. What a fabulous site!!! I am also a diabetic. Was diagnosed a little over 2 years ago, and until now have been on medication. I am looking forward to weening myself off by way of healthy diet and exercise. Knowing someone else has done it gives me hope! I've given myself until 2006 go do a tri - who knows if I will be patient enough to wait until then. Anyway... keep up the good work!
